Hydraulic hoses

Last time I harvested the grass, I found that the deck on my C-145 dropped back down after 5 seconds or so. I figured it was the lift cylinder. I asked in another thread what size orings were used, but didn't get any response. So I took my spare one apart a couple of days ago, and the orings were standard 1/8". Lucky for me I picked up an oring kit last year. I replaced two large orings and one small one. While I was at it, I painted the outside of the cylinder.

The paint on the cylinder was dry enough today that I put it all back together and decided to put it on the tractor.

While I was taking things apart, I noticed a lot of leaking from the hoses. Especially around the implement valve and the hydro pump. All of the connections were tight, so I figure it must be leaking from the swivels.

So, I need to replace three of the hoses, and I might as well replace the fourth. I think I'll head on down to tractor supply tomorrow to see what they have.

Tractor Supply didn't have nearly as much choice as I thought. They had a sign on the door saying that made custom hoses, so I decided to ask. Turns out they couldn't even make what I needed.

I am going to place an order with surplus center, and I thought I had most of what I need figured out, but am a little confused by the ORB #5 designation. Does that mean 1/2" thread size?

According to what I read at

http://www.discounth...cation_s/55.htm

SAE 5 is 1/2" Am I guessing correctly that SAE 5 is the same as ORB #5?

The hoses from my pump to the spool valve have larger connectors than the hoses from the valve to the cylinder. Kinda curious how they are measured.

A little help from the experts here would be appreciated.

James

On the Charger I started this post about all the fittings on the cylinder, valve, and pump were ORB#5. Refer to the link to a chart on this previous post....

Looking at my 160 auto there may be ORB#6 on the pump hoses at both ends.....check the threads referring to the chart. I would buy the appropriate ORB to JIC4 adapters then buy premade hoses with the JIC4 swivel ends.

Thanx Bob. It's a big help to know that I don't have some strange system with sizes that are impossible to find.

The chart sent me down the wrong track for a while, and I finally am getting it turned around. I printed it and checked my hose ends against it. The pump lines matched the 1/2" size, and the cylinder (smaller ones) matched the 3/8" size. I found that I had scaled the chart when I printed it, and reprinted it with no scaling. There is not that much difference between the two charts, and the hose ends almost match what I got before.

But if everyone says that the cylinder lines are 1/2", this conflicts with the chart. I checked my hose ends with a caliper, and the cylinder lines are indeed 1/2" and the pump lines are 9/16" The chart didn't have a nice pretty picture to match the ends against for 9/16" (not that it matters now anyway since it is wrong).

So, correct me if I am wrong, but 1/2" ends are ORB#5, and 9/16" ends are ORB#6?

James: Just went out to the shop and checked some fittings. ORB#5 has 1/2"NF Threads and you use a 5/8" wrench on it. ORB#6 has 9/16"NF and uses 11/16 wrench. My C series are not hydros. My old Electro and Charger used ORB 5 fitting and i use R3 1/4" hose. My 418 A hides the valve pretty well. The cylinder uses ORB5. (The only ORB6 I have needed were for the D200)

I find the discount hydraulic hose website easier to follow in trying to figure out what I need for things.

Yep- 1/2 x 20 thread. Same as automotive steel brake lines.... :eusa-think:

They work great on the lines/ hoses that don't need to move or flex. Just drill out the center of the brass couplers and use them to press the flare against the JIC face. I've used them for years on my Bronco with no problems.

Thankyou Paul and kpinnc!

It's all finally starting to gel now. That chart really sent me the wrong way. I printed it on a different printer (with no scaling), and it came out ridiculously large.

I seems my C-145 has a mix of ORB5 and ORB6 fittings.

I am going to order up some ORB5 and ORB6 to JIC37 adapters along with the appropriate hoses. I might poke around the internet to see if I can find some shorter R3 hoses, but I don't hold out much hope of finding them from a major supplier.

James, I really never looked at the pictures...I just saw that #5 was 1/2 inch 20 thread and #6 was 9/16 inch 18 thread.

Bob,

I should have taken you approach. I would not have had so many headaches.

Do yourself a favor and stay away from the pictures on page two!

BTW, any information that you have shared so far has been greatly appreciated.

Been looking at a lot or Raiders and Chargers lately and was wondering if they all have LSD? I know most of them did but I was wondering if some of the later models might have had the Uni drives instead ?

      Thanks, Robbie.

I am wondering if there was ever a Service Manual for this particular tractor.
So far all I have found are Owners Manuals (one came with the tractor)
Since this is my first attempt at a HW with a Hydro I am probably going to need all the help I can get
      Any help will be appreciated

I own a Charger 9, it is a 68 and I am wondering what I should ask for it.
I personally want to trade it, just cannot find anything worth my efforts.
I found a younger gentleman in his 20's, he's over 650 miles away from me and he has himself a raider 12, I want it just he wants two tractors for it.
I personally feel my Charger is worth more than 250, as it is one of a kind.
      Please, let me know.

I just obtained a Charger V7 Automatic. The reservoir is empty and the tranny has no fluid present. There is some residual, so no corrosion appears to be present and the wheels turn freely.  I would appreciate input on fluid to use (I believe the manual recommended Wheel Horse #8827 or Texaco Transhydral).  Thanks.
