1960 suburban 400 with Kholer 4hp. need some advice on rebuilding.

I got a great deal on a 1960 suburban 400 and the engine has some issues. It has compression and I can get it to start few times but doesn't stay running. It acts like it doesn't get spark all the time. I changed the plug wire and the points. What else could cause this to happen? There are only 2 wires coming out from under the flywheel besides the coil wire; 1 hooks up to the points and the other if its touching metal kills the engine. Is there a ground for it some where?

Welcome to RS!! If you did the plug wire and points, I'll ask the obvious and mention did you put in a new condensor also? I've had a few motors that don't run long because of it. Also, you didnt mention if you cleaned out the carb or not. Spark and carb. are useually the first things to do. I wouldn't shortcut either of them. Good luck, my first horse was a 61 suburban.

I just had the engine running and made sure the gears were working. Now I am going to take apart the carb and rebuild it as well as the head-gasket needs replaced. I will post more pictures as I go.

When we went to look at the suburban I thought he was going to pee his pants with excitement. He loves his mower. at least he thinks its his.

That's a great picture you have Matt. I agree starting them young is the way to go.

Do any of you have any good sites for carb rebuild kits for the suburban?
