Breakerless To Points Ignition

Recommended Posts

Firts, thanks to those who responded to my post looking for a coil.I decided to go the points and condenser route.I did an online search and I see that Kohler sells a kit to go from breakerless to points.Part number

237750-S.Anyone here ever bought this kit?I see it has a set of points,a condenser, coil, points plunger, point cover, all the screws to put it all together, and a pigtail wire.Doesn't say anything about a different ignition switch.I take it you leave everything behind the flywheel and just snip the wire off?Can anyone provide detailed instructions on how to do this swap so everything runs OK?Thanks for any info.

Your call but $150 for the kit is a bit rich for my blood. I would guess Kelly or one of the vendors here could fix you up with a coil covers screws etc. i would probably spring for new points, condenser, plunger, and gasket.

I am 99.(% certain you will have to change out the ignition switch. Yours will have a terminal marked M it ground out the magneto to stop the engine. You will need one with an "I" terminal that provides 12v to the coil in the run and start positions. Don't get carried away cutting wires. some are for your charging system.

Use ignition switch # 103990 you can find them on ebay. I don't know if you have a wiring diagram, if you do you can use it if you don't this is how you wire it . The switch will have the letters R(rectifier) A(accessory) I (ignition) S(start) B(battery). The wire from R goes to B+ post on regulator/rectifier, wire from A goes to lights, wire from I goes to pos. side of coil, wire from S goes to small screw post on solinoid, wire from B goes to pos. side of solinoid. Wire from points and condenser goes to neg. side of coil. If I remember right the only wire you have to remove is the wire that goes from the trigger module to the breakerless coil. Hope this helps. :thumbs2:

im sure you could source all this stuff individually and it would be a bunch cheaper.......

the points cover could be found used, screws bought new or used. get mine through mcmaster carr.

the parts, even kohler oem would run approx.....

ignition coil 4151921s $65 (but aftermarket would be cheaper around $20-$30)

points 4715003s $9

condenser 230722s $6

pushrod 4741104s $6.75

hi tension lead 238057s $16

with the oem coil (way overpriced in my book-but i still buy them) about $100, with aftermarket coil $70.

and a bit of wire for the points to coil and thats probably about it.

these numbers are what i have used before for my engines, not sure if they are what you want. all purchased through napa.
