Look under the center console plate, the one between your legs. There is a cam and follower on the left side (if seated on the tractor) mounted vertically. Depending on the model, it's usually under the brake set lever. If the cam has come loose, the DCL (direction control lever) won't be forced back to neutral when the brake is depressed. It's held in place by a single bolt, which can come loose and the cam will fall off. It only goes back on one way, so if that's it- it will be an easy fix.

Forest Road

That would do it. I just went through that with a 1989 model as well. I had to pull the side panel and manipulate the brake rod enough so I could drill a hole in the end. Then I had to reassemble and get a cotter pin into it. Took a little bit of time but not horrendous. Only way to get the brake rod completely out was to pull the hydro cylinder and I wasn't in the mood.
