10hp Kohler engine

Recommended Posts

I came across a guy selling a 10 Kohler out of a 65' cub cadet. It comes with gen, starter, battery and wiring. Just wondering if i should grab this for a future Wheel Horse project. I just purchased my first W.H. last week and have caught the bug. Any thoughts on value? Thanks.

What is he asking for it? Without seeing it or hearing it run, you have no idea whether it smokes, knocks, or for that matter even runs at all.

He is asking $50.....said it needs a head gasket.

for $50 i would get it if complete. just remember there are differences between kohlers that were installed in cubs and wheelhorses. most notable is crankshaft pto size. the 10 hp kohlers (k241) on the wheelhorses for the most part were all 1 1/8" cranks, where as cub cranks are usually 1" ......

another thing to consider is starter generator rotation is opposite. also oil pans are different, if you dont care about crank size and you can sell off the unwanted cub stuff, and mechanically its still usable, i say for $50 you cant go wrong. just dont expect it to be a bolt on for most wheelhorses without some work.

I buy all the complete Kohler I can for that price, BUT the starter/gen will not work on a WH it turns CCW because it drives the PTO end of the crank, the cubs most all use the small base block, like the early short frame tractors, and the later shaker mount engines, the tin on the engine is different than a WH, the flywheel will not work on a WH because it has no mounting lugs to install a starter pulley for the gen. most cubs also use a 1" crank only used on early WH's with a 10hp or larger engine, the carb is set up for different linkage but can be adapted, but I think it's a good deal if you have room to store it.

Martin beat me to it :angry-cussingblack:

Thanks for the replies..... that is the info I was looking for. I think I will probably pass on the engine if its not correct for a W.H.

Brian,

I live in West Point, UT (~45 miles north of you) and am looking for an 8 HP Kohler for a Wheelhorse 855, but I know a 10HP was also used on the 855's. My 8HP had a catastrophic failure, and cannot get it repaired. Let me know the details at: robertj_391@msn.com.

Thanks,

Bob Shafer
