AMC RULES 36,961 #1 Posted April 12, 2012 So the story goes, about a month or so ago I took a road trip to check out a tractor for sale. Cold, and rainy out that day but I took it for a short drive around the guys driveway before purchasing. No big deal, noted a little hydro leak but I knew about that before purchasing...seemed to run just fine so I brought it home, stuck in in the shed, waited for a nice day to drag it back out. Last weekend nice sunny day, I walk out to the shed, put some fire in the hole, no problem...she fires right up. Pulled it out of the shed, sitting there at low idle in the yard, I notice a fine mist of oil being thrown out in front of the tractor. After removing the belt guard, I notice oil pouring down the side of the block from these two points, hits the belt, and is now throwing oil like a geyser. So, I gotta ask...WTF over? Seems kinda weird to me that it wasn't leaking when I bought it, sits in the shed for a month, and after firing it up for the first time here at home, now it's leaking like a sieve. Why is it leaking from these two points...I've touched nothing beside removing the belt guard? Don't be shy...I've got a thick coat on. :teasing-poke:
Rooster 191 #2 Posted April 12, 2012 Pull those bolts out..it is quite possible that some one "repaired" the threads in them and drilled through....it has been done before!
AMC RULES 36,961 #3 Posted April 12, 2012 Drilled all the way through the block? Humm, I'm assuming you're telling me they're not supposed to be?
Rooster 191 #4 Posted April 12, 2012 No they are not supposed to be. If they have been drilled thru, your going to have to seal them up some how.
CRE1992 135 #5 Posted April 12, 2012 This is where RTV or liquid gasket comes in handy.
AMC RULES 36,961 #6 Posted April 12, 2012 Closer inspection shows me that it's the crank seal leaking. So now I need a rear oil seal, can it be replaced without opening up the motor? Found a complete gasket set on Ebay...wondering if this listed price of $20.00 for a complete gasket set is a fair price to pay? http://www.ebay.com/...=item53e99c8211
TT-(Moderator) 1,129 #7 Posted April 12, 2012 The Kohler P/N is X-583-2-S and it can be replaced without removing the crankshaft. Use anything other than genuine Kohler seals & gaskets at your own risk.

1054josh 25 #9 Posted April 12, 2012 I use aviation sealer from napa around the outside of the seal to guarantee no leaks
