Doubletrouble 10 #1 Posted April 8, 2012 I have a '71 workhorse 800 with the original 8hp techy. The fuel filter is new but it runs dry while the engine is running. The engine seems to starve for fuel a little while it working but it does run. Any ideas? Could the fuel pump be getting weak? Thanks for any help.
smoreau 658 #2 Posted April 8, 2012 Is there a screen in the fuel tank that is plugged up? Make sure you have good fuel flow to the pump, if that is ok then make sure the needle and seat is working correctly and not sticking. Old fuel lines that are hard and stiff can cause issues as they can close off inside and not let fuel flow like they should. If all the above is ok, then the fuel pump should be the issue. Doubletrouble 10 #3 Posted April 8, 2012 The fuel lines are only a couple years old. Fuel flow through the line by gravity just fine up to the filter. I think I will replace the pump diaphram and try that.
gwgdog66 23 #4 Posted April 9, 2012 Check out the screen in the tank fuel shut off valve. It may have crud in it restricting flow. My C-160 would only fill about a 1/4 of the filter when it was running. I pulled the shutoff valve out of the bottom of the tank and cleaned the screen with carb cLleaner and compressed air, an that fixed that problem right up. Doubletrouble 10 #5 Posted April 9, 2012 My shut off valve is mounted on the frame just below the tank. Would there still be a screen in it?

Doubletrouble 10 #7 Posted April 20, 2012 Sorry I didnt get a pic of it. I dont think the screen is plugged though. gas runs out of the line freely. I just put a rebuild kit in the fuel pump and it's still doing the same thing. I dont get it. help?????
Kelly 1,033 #8 Posted April 20, 2012 There is no screen in your shut off valve, and your tank is probably the style with the nipple made as part of the tank, make sure the gas cap is venting correctly, leave it loose for a few min. when running it to see if the gas flows more freely. Doubletrouble 10 #9 Posted April 21, 2012 I got it to work!! I simply had to purge the trapped air out of the filter. After that it was fine......so far. lol I did this by taking the line of the side of the filter to the carb. to release the air I held it well below the fuel level in the tank and let gravity do the rest. Trouty56 567 #10 Posted April 22, 2012 The fuel filter is new but it runs dry while the engine is running. There for a while I was hoping you may have stumbled on a solution for the high price of oil....
Doubletrouble 10 #11 Posted April 22, 2012 That would have been great! A tractor that runs on air! lol
