Challenger 27 #1 Posted April 5, 2012 I'm requesting the wisdom of the Kohler experts here. The Kohler Command twin cylinder in a 520xi: With reasonable maintenance, what is the anticipated service life of this engine (in hours) before a rebuild should be needed. I know every machine will have unique factors that will affect this. I just want to hear a ball park estimation. Is a machine with 500 - 600 hours a HIGH HOUR machine with this Kohler engine? Thanks. Jim_M 178 #2 Posted April 5, 2012 5-600 hours is still pretty low. With good maintenance they are good for 2500 hours. A friend of mine owns a lawn service, just yesterday I looked at 4 of his mowers, the highest hour engine was 2600 and the lowest was 1800 and none of them has had any major work but he did tell me the 2600 hour machine is getting tired and using oil. All of his engines are running oil coolers. These engines run hot so it's very important to keep them clean and keep good clean oil in them.

Kelly 1,028 #4 Posted April 6, 2012 I know of a 522XI with 2200 hours it uses a little oil but runs good, my Brother had a Cub Cadet with 1800 hours with a 18hp and it ran good, used some oil, but leaked bad at the valve covers.
