dustycarter 3 #1 Posted April 1, 2012 I move from 1 problem to the next. I just went and bought a $30 belt and now its not working. The Previous Owner had A Gated B80 drive Belt on it. It did fine for the 1st year I had it then its started slipping and I knew I needed another belt. SO went to O'Reilleys because they are the only people with the Gates belts around here. Got it, the belt is 83'' long. Does that sound normal for my tractor? When I start it up, and push the clutch in, it will make a bad noise and jerk real bad. My other belt didn't do that but this one sure does. I got the old belt off and sized it with my new one and they seamed the same. So what in the world have I done wrong? My neighbor is fixin to have a belt and a few wrenches in his yard if I cant fix this stupid thing. I guess this is why i cant be a mechanic. I have no patience!!!!!! 1989 Wheel Horse 312-
Sparky-(Admin) 22,686 #2 Posted April 1, 2012 I think the belt should be 81 1/2" - 82" long. Your belt sounds to long to me. Why not get a belt from TORO Wheelhorse? Why would you buy the same belt that only lasted one season ? I have bought a few Wheel Horse belts (#7473) and they seem to last forever. I've never worn one out and the only time I have to change a drive belt is when I buy a tractor with an aftermarket belt on it that has given up. And price...my neighbor just bought a #7374 belt from a dealer for $32 so that off brand belt didnt really save you anything. Mike.........
dustycarter 3 #3 Posted April 1, 2012 Yeah it didn't save me anything but it costed me. Well the guy who had it before me said that he changed it a year or 2 before he gave it to me. And when I got it, It had the gates Drive belt package in the box that he gave me. So I just went by that. So I pretty much just wasted $25 and now i need to get a $30 belt? Well that sucks. Oh well I guess i learned from that mistake. SO I need a Wheel Horse 7374 drive belt that is 82'' long?

BOWTIE 226 #6 Posted April 2, 2012 HELLO DUSTY, MAKE SURE YOU CHECK YOUR IDLER PULLEY FOR A BAD BEARING. THAT CAN MAKE IT JERK ALSO. GOOD LUCK BOWTIE IN OHIO
tunahead72 2,527 #7 Posted April 2, 2012 That's a good point from BOWTIE. In fact, you may want to check that pulley first, before you invest in a new belt. Do you hear any squealing from that area when the clutch is engaged?
dustycarter 3 #8 Posted April 2, 2012 HELLO DUSTY, MAKE SURE YOU CHECK YOUR IDLER PULLEY FOR A BAD BEARING. THAT CAN MAKE IT JERK ALSO. GOOD LUCK BOWTIE IN OHIO That's a good point from BOWTIE. In fact, you may want to check that pulley first, before you invest in a new belt. Do you hear any squealing from that area when the clutch is engaged? Good Morning! The idler pulley seamed easy to turn and did ok with the other belt. I turned it and it span freely. I went and checked that this morning before I went and spent another $30. Never really thought about checking it but I'm glad you reminded me. As far as the squealing, It never squealed when I had the old belt on. But the old belt wouldnt catch all the time so I guess everything was ok before I worked on it. Go figure! Thank you for the suggestions and help!
SNYFIX 13 #9 Posted April 3, 2012 Some people put it over the foot brace shaft instead of under it plus because they're hard to see put it over the engine belt guides instead of under them as well.
