meadowfield 2,756 #8 Posted April 2, 2012 maybe it's just a UK word... It's definitely used a lot in the North of England. I know of a few people who were employed as fettlers - they worked in a foundry and their job was to knock the sharp edges off castings and file them into a clean shape and square for drilling and machining. Trouty56 567 #9 Posted April 2, 2012 Gotta watch using the "F" word.....oh well...I think it's time for another cup of fettling coffee.....
wheeledhorseman 579 #10 Posted April 2, 2012 We've heard of the term here in the sunny south Mark but it just isn't a term you hear every day, in fact you hardly ever hear it used at all. Means (in the South at least) to pare away at a piece of metal whereas you 'whittle' a piece of wood. It is an amusing word, perhaps because of the old school humour.... "Do you like Kipling?" "I don't know, I've never Kippled!" I don't think there are many professional 'Fettlers' down here or 'Whittlers' for that matter but for many years the factory that made 'Mr. Kipling' brand cakes was located at nearby Eastleigh so we had lots of 'Kipplers' !
