tunahead72 2,553 #3 Posted March 24, 2012 Assuming the engine's original... Kohler K241S -- 1985 or 1986 Kohler Magnum M10S -- 1987 or later You can check the model list here for the particular engine spec numbers used each year: There's also some 310-8 photos in the (old) picture gallery, probably in the new one also, I just haven't looked. The 1985 model had noticeably different hood decals than later years: http://www.wheelhors...3-1985-to-2007/ Can you read any part of the tractor VIN plate? Where is it located, in front of the seat or on the left side of the fender?
stephan07 10 #4 Posted March 25, 2012 here is a link it wont let me up load much for pics on here original motor was a kohler k series. vin is on the front of the fenders in the center above the shift plate. http://www.photobucket.com/310wh
tunahead72 2,553 #5 Posted March 25, 2012 It looks like an '86 to me, but it's been heavily modified, maybe for pulling -- exhaust, rear wheels/tires, rear hitch, etc., is that a fuel tank in front of the engine? You mentioned the original motor was a Kohler K series, this one looks like it's one of the cradle-mounted engines from an earlier C-series. Can you read the engine plate? If I'm right, the plate will say it's a model K241AS (original would have been a K241S, different oil pan & dipstick). What else do you know about the tractor and engine? I've downloaded a few photos from your photobucket link:

You mentioned the original motor was a Kohler K series, this one looks like it's one of the cradle-mounted engines from an earlier C-series. Can you read the engine plate? If I'm right, the plate will say it's a model K241AS (original would have been a K241S, different oil pan & dipstick). the engine is a k321. it and the cradle came from my c145. the orignal engine is sitting in a garage with my other wheel horse stuff What else do you know about the tractor and engine? its got 8 pinion rear transaxle from a c series. engine has a forged piston and a reground cam. belly mount weight bracket the wheelie bars slide in to the tubes on hitch. the body is original this tractor was bought new by my grandpa. i have a tiller, blade, deck, harrow, belly mount cultivator, rear mount cultivator and most of a moleboard plow. on toros sight there are 2 different model numbers for a 86 so its down to 2 now
tunahead72 2,553 #7 Posted March 26, 2012 on toros sight there are 2 different model numbers for a 86 so its down to 2 now I know this was discussed in the last year or so, I'll see if I can dig up an old thread. Don't quote me on this just yet, but if I remember correctly there's very little difference between the two 1986 models (21-10K802 and 21-10K803), and I believe somebody speculated that the 10K803 was the first 310-8 marketed under the Toro name. I do remember that one of the transmission bearings was different, but this wouldn't matter to you since yours has an earlier transmission (unless you still have the original). Interesting machine, what's the plan?
tunahead72 2,553 #8 Posted March 26, 2012 Here's some selected posts from the thread I was thinking about, one that kind of turned into a "310-8 documentation" thread. The first two posts are mostly about my own 1986 310-8, the second and third mention differences between the two 1986 models: There's a lot of other useful information in that thread if you have the time to read it all. Hope this helps!
stephan07 10 #9 Posted March 26, 2012 i think kinda of a resto mod is what you would call it if it was a car. gonna keep the alums and get some for the front. get paint and decals down. kinda of the way i would have built it type of deal, but still functional. going to get some wheel spacers for a jeep to get the rear tires out of the way so i can use the rear quick attach mount and put the stock gas tank back in. the tractor belonged to my late grandpa so kind of redoing it in memory of him. tunahead72 2,553 #10 Posted March 27, 2012 Sounds good, especially doing it all in your grandpa's memory. Hope it all works out for you, keep us posted!
