dsholler 54 #1 Posted March 8, 2012 So now my '87 414-8 is running nicely. (I just got this thing..so I do not know much about it. ). I have noticed that when I ride it around, even with the PTO clutch disengaged, the PTO pulley still spins. When I have the tractor stopped and I engage and then disengage the PTO clutch, the pulley does not come away from the driven disc, at least not so you would notice. There is also some kind of brake for the pulley on the outside of the clutch plate, that has obviously been scoring the plate for some time. I am currently running it with the mower deck off, so there is no tension on the PTO pulley. I was curious if this is what was causing it, or was there something that needed to be adjusted about the mechanism. Any hints, clues etc. on how to get this to work right woudl be helpful. (I have also noticed that I sometimes need to jiggle the PTO clutch handle to get it to start, but I assumed that this was due to a failing safety switch.... )

rmaynard 16,247 #3 Posted March 8, 2012 The older models had a helper spring inside the PTO that pushed the housing out and against the brake pad. Later models use only the engage and disengage mechanism to do the same thing. The brake on yours may need to be adjusted or replaced.

slufoot733 70 #5 Posted March 8, 2012 Just a note, is there a belt on this pully you're asking about? I have a manual clutch on my WH also and IF I don't have an attachment mounted on the tractor, i.e. no mower, etc, and therefore no belt on the pully, then the pully spins weather or not the clutch is engaged. If the belt is installed and is properly tensioned, then the pully should not spin unless the clutch is engaged.
dsholler 54 #6 Posted March 8, 2012 Nope, no belt, just a naked pulley.

Toro still sells that break P/N 94-6652 . Chas
BOWTIE 226 #8 Posted March 9, 2012 HELLO DSHOLLER, YOU SHOULD HAVE A HELPER SPRING ON THE ENGAGEMENT LEVER BY THE DASH. YOU SHOULD SEE A COTTER PIN IN THE LEVER GOING TO THE PTO. IT GOES IN THE COTTER PIN AND ATTACHES TO A BRACKET IN FRONT OF IT. SPRING IS ABOUT 2 1/2" LONG AND YOU BUY FROM TORO OR GO TO A HARWARE STORE AND FIND SOMETHING THAT WORK. IT WILL KEEP YOU FROM JIGGLING THE LEVER WHEN STARTING AND KEEP YOU CLUTCH DISC FROM RUBBING THE PULLEY PLATE. GOOD LUCK BOWTIE IN OHIO

If the brake is properly adjusted according to the link posted by WH854 the PTO will not spin when not engaged.
dsholler 54 #10 Posted March 9, 2012 part of the reason I was was asking this is that the safety interlock sometimes does not switch off when I disengage the PTO clutch, and I wondered if that was because it was not moving far enough, but it does not appear to be related.. I may just have a switch that is on its way out.
