Need Deminsions of Onan 20hp Crankshaft For PTO

Recommended Posts

Wheel-N-It

Hey guys, this will be a no-brainer for some of you. Now that I have the 312 & 417 ready for Spring, I am beginning to look at finding an engine to repower the 520. It was equiped with a 20hp Onan, and I have the PTO clutch. So what I need to know is what I should be looking for in crank size for my PTO clutch to marry up to the replacement engine? Keep in mindI am not interested in going back with an Onan. I am more of a fan of Kohlers.

I will check back as soon as I can, but I have two family members with medical issues i have to give time to today. I will be leaving home around noon, so if anyione has a question for me after that time, I will not be able to respond until probably later this evening.

As always, thank you much for your help with this.

If the 520 was an 8-speed, you would have many more options. The 5.25-inch hydro engine pulley (behind the PTO bell) is common in the 1.125 ID size, but rare in the 1.00 ID version. They do exist, but tend to be pricey if you find them.

I would say anything in the 1.125 (1 and 1/8th) size, with a minimum of 2.5 inch PTO shaft length should work. Most Kohler Magnum and K-series engines above 10hp will have a PTO shaft like what you're looking for, just be sure to check the length. Briggs engines tend to lean more to the 1-inch PTO shaft. Again this will work, but finding the engine pulley will take time and probably be more expensive.

KP, it is a 520Hydro. Appx a 1995 Model. It has the swept forward front axle if that helps. I would like to repower with a Kohler if at all possible.

Many Kohlers over 10hp should have the PTO size you're looking for. 1 and 1/8th OD x about 3-inches long.

Keep in mind that re-powering with a Kohler will leave some of your dash instrumentation useless. Fuel level, volts/ amps, and hour meter will be all that works afterward.

Thank you mucho KP !!! I will keep all that in mind as I begin to make some progress with this project. Some of the instrumentation I don't need anyway. If I can have a fuel guage, volt meter, and hour meter working, then thats plenty good enough for me. If I can somehow get the tachometer working then I'll feel like I'm on a big tractor :auto-swerve:
