SousaKerry 503 #2 Posted March 5, 2012 Dad had one similar to that only his had a screw to compress it, you would slip one jaw in on each end of the spring turn the screw to compress the spring and out fell the keepers (almost always into the oil pan) :banghead:
Rooster 192 #3 Posted March 5, 2012 With it open like it is now, push it over the spring. then you push the little thumb button and the handle will open up. Squeeze the handles like a pair of pliers and they will compress the spring. The "ratchet" bar will hold it compressed. Leave enough room to release the thumb button, you will have to slightly squeeze the handles to let the pressure off of it to release the spring.
KC9KAS 4,744 #4 Posted March 5, 2012 After looking real close, you will see that the device handles are squeezed closed and the fork end is open. The ratchet mechanism is in the locked position now.... I think with the handles open and the forks closed you would then slip it under the spring....between the bottom of the spring and the block.....squeeze the handle to spread the forks...the ratchet mechanism would lock it in place an you then install/remove the valve keepers. Of course you would have to be sure to push the valve down tight against the seat to allow as much stem as possible for keeper installation/removal. Just my thoughts.... Rooster 192 #5 Posted March 5, 2012 That is an old KD, I am pretty sure, it has a double pivot. once you push it over the springs the handle will pull up and catch.
