sned 15 #1 Posted March 5, 2012 Started my 310-8 to get ready to do some work and noticed it's burning a little oil. Never just being content with it running I have decided to either rebuild my 10 or take my buddies 12 off of his 312-8. Part of me wants to rebuild the 10 just so I can say I did it and know it's brand new. Part of me wants to up the hp for my loader and take the easy route. Really torn he wants $100 for the engine. Not really concerned about it being original as it already is a bit of a frankenstein. What should I do? Also there is a toro dealer and wheelhorse dealer 2 min from my house. They seem to have everything.
rmaynard 16,333 #2 Posted March 5, 2012 For the $100, I would take the 12 and put it on your tractor. If it's a good engine, $100 is a steal. Then, at your leisure, rebuild the 10 and have it for a spare, or put it back on the 310 if you want to keep it original.
bowtiebutler956 650 #4 Posted March 5, 2012 I agree with maynard, I would put the 12 on it, you will like the boost in power, and you can always rebiuld the 10 later down the line, and you can take your time doing it, without your tractor being out of commission. sned 15 #5 Posted March 6, 2012 Ok sounds good. Thats the most expensive option. But probably worth it. Is there a manual or guide I can find for all recommended torques and tolerances?

tunahead72 2,546 #8 Posted March 6, 2012 I'm with the other guys who've already responded, assuming your friend's 12 HP is in good running condition. It seems like the best of both worlds to be able to get more power now and rebuild your 10 HP when you get the time. Just a couple of other things to consider before you make a final decision: Have you run your engine long enough to see that it's burning oil all the time, or do you just get a little bit of smoke when you first start it up? Are the two engines K-series or Magnums? If your 10 HP is a K241, see if it's marked "K301" on the right side of the block, just above the PTO clutch/pulley area.
