eibbed 63 #1 Posted March 5, 2012 Hey guys, Is it possible to convert a 5.5 Tecumseh Lawson recoil start to an electric start? Thanks Dave
Kelly 1,033 #2 Posted March 5, 2012 First you have to see if the block is drilled for the starter bolts, I know some of my early tuckys are not drilled, then if the bolt holes are there you will need the flywheel with ring gear, starter, blower housing with the bump in it for the starter, then the wiring to run the starter, then you need to charge the batt. that will involves more parts and more wiring. eibbed 63 #3 Posted March 5, 2012 Kelly, Thanks for the speedy and informative response. Out of curiosity, I am assuming that the parts you mentioned in your reply could come from a 6Hp electric start Tecumseh engine? I greatly appreciate the help. SkyhawkTL 19 #4 Posted March 5, 2012 Yes - the 5.5 and H60 are mostly interchangeable. This is a 5.5 and you can see the 4 starter mount holes and the ring gear on the flywheel. If the engine has a battery charger, the flywheel will have many magnets and you have to use the point mount and point cam for that flywheel - its different than ignition only flywheels. The finished engine.
