mrc 731 #1 Posted March 3, 2012 hi guys, never had a tiller and am helping a friend with one. today i got rid of all the dried dirt and hay/straw in the tines. i took the tines off and cleaned the stub shafts. i then cleaned the inside tube of the tines. i put some anti-sieze and grease on the stub shafts and re assembled. question #1 hair pins or cotter pins on the 4 pins that hold the tines onto the stub shafts??? any real difference??? question #2 i see where to drain and fill the gearbox on the tiller??? what type lube and how much??? question #3 the back flap is about 5 inches in length and looks stock. is that the correct legth??? thank you. mike in mass. Tim 97 #2 Posted March 4, 2012 use cotter pins i cut and pasted below MAINTENANCE The gear case is filled with oil at the factory and should not require filling. However, the oil level should be checked before using tiller and periodically afterwards. To check oil level the tiller should be on the tractor with the tines touching the ground. Remove the pipe plug on the bottom of the gear case. If oil runs from this hole then the oil is at its proper level. General purpose transmission type SAE 90 weight oil is used. When storing the unit for a long period of time, smear a light coat of grease on the tines to prevent rust.

tgranthamfd 28 #4 Posted March 5, 2012 All the flaps I have seen, run the entire length of the tiller case, and are in the neighborhood of 5 to 8 inches in width. The flap should have stops on the outside and the underside to keep it from getting in the tines.
