1986 417-A Where is the oil filter?

Recommended Posts

Wheel-N-It

Hey Guys, I swear I am not trying to ask a stupid question here, but brought home a 1986 WH 417-A late yesterday evening, then had to take a friend to the hospital, and did not get home till bout 11pm.

So scrambling trying to get to work not too late this morning I went out to the garage to quickly see where the oil filter screws on to the engine, and to my surprise could not find it.

Anyway, this is a Generation 2 engine, there is a sticker on the air cleaner stating this.

Question is;

Does this engine have an oil filter???

On more piece to this puzzle;

In a box of spare parts, there is a Kohler brand oil filter. The part number is 12 050 01

Thank you all for your time and help.

Van

there is no oil filter thats why you have to change your oil every 25 hrs and you had better stick to that

:angry-nono: :angry-nono: oil filters or no oil filters.Most small engines.

Like Kohler ..Briggs an strattan.Etc. Dont have a replaceable oil filter.

Theres no problem.Just change the oil fairly regular. You wont have much bother then.Thats providing the engine is OK now.

I have run small engines on lots of equipment.and had no trouble.

Some body will most likely say the same.Bye for now from Yorkshire England.(Home of the Yorshire Puddings) :eusa-think: :eusa-think: :eusa-think: :eusa-think: :eusa-think: :eusa-think: :eusa-think:

Kohler put oil filters on several KT 17/19 and Magnum 18s...if the customer wanted them. For some reason WH never did. Other brands (e.g. JD) asked for and got filters on their Kohlers.

can whlvr

thats why i over change,i try not to go past 20,its hard to know on a machine without an hour meter,and when you run more that one machine you loose track,so i change it more often,ive had to rebuild a few motors now from poor maintanence,it doesnt cost much more to do it more often,thats only my opinion

Well that's good for me to hear I thought the Series II's had a filter. I have one that has a Seies II sticker on it but there was no filter. Now I guess it my be a Series II. Thanks for that info.

Thank you everyone. Rexman, I will change the hydro oil and filter too. I probably will see my local Toro dealer for that one as I am sure I will want to order another thing or two from him. Norlett, thank you for helping me from across the big pond. 546 cowboy, you are not alone:)

Everyone else, thank you too:)

The Series II will take an oil filter but wheel horse did not put them on.

On the back side of the block and very near to the PTO and belt cover is a plate than can be replaced with an oil filter adapter or remote oil filter adapter.

The remote would probably be the best way to go since the location directly on the engine is not good for a wheel horse.

The easiest thing to do is change oil frequently.

Her is an article where a guy put a remote filter on the KT17 II in a JD.

Jack, thank you for your help. I think when I get finished with all the maintenance, and polishing, and fitting a larger mowing deck (that I already have here) to the 417, I then will work on getting a remote filter adapter kit and put that on to help the engine to live a little longer. When I go to my Toro dealer this week to get a hydro filter, I will ask my dealer if he can get one for me. My dealer Bob is the same guy I bought my 312-8 from 21 years ago. He is a great guy, and I like doing business with him. Whenever I get the adapter, I will start a thread regarding it. Have a good weekend.
