Pto outer bearing

I have a 520 H and I want to change the outer bearing an shaft an lock rings on the pto.I know the bell has to be removed but does the roller bearing (INNER )Have to be removed To be able to bang out the outer bearing.I would appreciate the proper procedure. Also what type of lubracation do you use on the roller bearing?

I am not sure what you are calling outer and inner bearings :scratchead: They are all inside the bell. 36 is a roller bearing,38 is a needle bearing.

No you do not have to remove the needle bearing to remove the roller bearing, just the other way around. You will have to remove the clips,you need a special tool to do this.I did mine I took the outside clip off which holds the roller in the bell, sprayed some carb cleaner on it let i soak for a while,cleaned it with a rag. opened up my vice enough to set the bell on with the little shaft down. Then used a wooden dowl and hammer. Tap on it gentle like and it poped right out,be careful don't bend the inside clip. you could replace the clips with new ones. Plus the grease seal. :thumbs:

Yep, as Chas says, and you could also remove the short Shaft first by removing the small outer Snap Ring, clean off any burrs and tap the shaft into the Housing and remove it from inside. This will prevent any damage to the other small Snap Ring.

Also, while tapping the Bearing out, alternate the hammer taps to the opposite side and work around it as if it was a clock face, i.e 12-6, 9-3, 7-2 etc. This will keep the Bearing fairly square with the bore while it's coming out.

Lastly , check the condition of the small Outer Snap Ring and it's Shaft groove for wear. All the pressure of the PTO against the Clutch Plate is carried by that Snap Ring.
