K301 carb issue

I got my new to me charger running tonight after taking apart the carb and fuel pump and got all the varnish out. Now it will run with the choke on but as soon as you take the choke off it dies. If you give it some throttle while the choke is off it will run for a short time. What am i over looking?

i think that the high speed needle is partially or totally blocked. remove it and test out if you have a clear passage all the way from the top holes to the bottom holes near the tip. i usually put one end in in my mouth and form a tight seal with my lips and force air through the inside of the needle. you will hear if air is making it through to the other end. also pays to make sure the holes are clear with a very small drill or piece of wire. just dont make them bigger than they are.

thats probably most of your problem. another thing to check would be float height. you are having problems getting enough gas through and the choke is compensating for it by reducing the air in the mixture and helping the cylinder draw fuel by creating more suction.

i would also check the idle passages.. that varnish is still in there causing you problems.

Cleaning that varnish out is obviously a good start, but nothing beats soaking the carb body in cleaner at least overnight- and installing a new kit.

Glad to hear another NC machine has been brought back to life! :eusa-clap:

i will do some more cleaning tomorrow, the varnish was thick and hard to get off so im sure there is still some more in there, ill go ahead and check the float height as well. i figured it wasnt getting enough fuel , carbs are not really my specialty. haha. Thanks for the info it is much appreciated.

It defenitly needs soaked for sure but i couldnt resist i had to hear it run, this is the second day i have had it. you know kid with a new toy syndrome.

Dumb question.... how many turns out have you set the high speed needle. Need anywhere from 2-3 turns usually

i have posted this a few times but if you can find any shops that have an ultrasonic cleaner this works amazing,my last purchase that i rebuilt lately woundnt run with the orig carb,i put a spare on and it ran good, soaked the orig carb in the ultrasonic cleaner and it works as new,no rebuild kit, just a good cleaning and away you go,i do realize not very many people have these but if you can find one its worth it

Well after cleaning the high speed needle passage and needle itself and setting all the adjustments ( mix screw 2 turns from bottom, high speed 2,5 turns from bottom) now it is dumping fuel into the air cleaner. Where do i go from here?

I have never heard of a ultrasonic cleaner, How does it work?

sounds like the float needle is stuck open, float level too high or float has a hole in it.

ultrasonic is a great idea if you have access to one. sounds like you need to pull the carb and do a thorough cleaning/rebuild. if its done right your problems should be over.

i lowered the float a little, and it still did it. I played with the float to make sure the needle was moving and was moving like it should.

I'd have to look at one to tell you where it is, but there is a vent passage in the carb body that points towards the aircleaner. Its purpose is to vent the float bowl. If that gets blocked up, it will puke fuel back out the front of the carb.

Assuming of course that the float isnt sticking down or the needle valve is for some reason not sealing.

is the needle sealing though?

check that vent passage like mike said too.

Mike- I did not check that vent, but im guessing its not because it is puking out the front of the carb.

Martin- That is a good question about it sealing, what is the float height supposed to be?

Mike- I did not check that vent, but im guessing its not because it is puking out the front of the carb.

Its been a while since the last time it happened to me, so its all a little hazy. But the blocked vent did make fuel squirt out the front of the carb. I seem to remember that it was different from a "normal" carb flooding situation, this was more like a squirt of fuel as opposed to the thing just dumping fuel everywhere like what happens when the float is stuck.

Its actually happened to me twice, both times on engines that had sat for a long time. The first time it took me a while to figure it out, the second time I remembered the problem.

I am quite possibly wrong about this, but I am thinking that the fuel didnt actually squirt out of the vent itself, I seem to remember that the blocked vent was allwing the bowl to pressurise, and the fuel was squirting out of somewhere else, maybe the little hole that points towards the air filter housing?

Sorry this is all so vague, its been a couple of (or 3 or 4?) years, and of course I didnt make any notes at the time. And quite possibly this is not your problem, but I thought I'd mention it in case you dont find something more obvious.

About the float - if you shake it you might either hear some fuel sloshing around inside it, or feel it moving around inside. You can also submerge it in water and look for bubbles as the air escapes. I've actually soldered up pinholes in a couple - use a big electric soldering iron and not a propane torch!

Glad you found something!

If there is gas in the float then there is a hole somewhere. If you cant find it to solder it up, then just put a new one in, from memory I think they are about $12 -$15.
