pfrederi 18,373 #1 Posted February 5, 2012 I recently bought a derelict 310-8 for $50. After some wiring repair and a carb cleaning she fired up and runs nicely. She is worth doing some work on so i went to look up the engine on the Kohler website. The label on the motor is very clear K241S Spec# 46849 (Serial 15080894). The Spec # matches the all years wheel horse spread sheet and is what the toro website shows as Spec#. However it doesn't show up on the Kohler Website. i downloaded the parts manual for K241 series and it is not listed there either. Two questions...what am I missing here. second question...The 310-8 design was a cheapie. The electrical system is a 5 amp unregulated system, enough to charge the battery (I hope) and power the ignition. The headlights run directly off the stator, dim at idle brighter at full throttle no light unless engine is running. i would like to change over to a 10 or 15 amp system like all my other machines. I am trying to find out if all i need to do is swap out the stator (and add a regulator) or do I also need to get a different flywheel (due to magnet spacing etc.)
tunahead72 2,519 #2 Posted February 6, 2012 Paul, Whatever you're missing on that spec number, I'm missing also. I just checked my copy of the K241 parts manual, which is the same one I uploaded to RedSquare a while back, and you're right that spec. 46849 doesn't appear. That particular manual only covers through spec. 46858 anyway, which means yours should be in there, but it also means that the 1986 310-8 (spec. 46863) isn't covered either. You would think that Kohler would have a more complete version of this manual available somewhere, but I've never seen one -- does anybody else know of one? Fortunately, I've had good luck finding parts for mine through PartsTree and some of the other online parts suppliers, and through NAPA as well, it seems they have better information than what Kohler is supplying to the rest of us. :dunno:
rmaynard 15,938 #3 Posted February 6, 2012 As long as your flywheel has the required 6 magnets for a 15 amp system, I don't see any reason why you couldn't install a 15 amp stator and regulator, then rewire the tractor as shown in the wiring diagrams for other 15 amp units. I have a K301 that came from the factory with a 3 amp system. A 15 amp stator from my old K241AS and the a standard 6 magnet flywheel were a direct fit, and made conversion very simple. I did a Google search for "Kohler 46849", and got several hits that showed some parts, but nothing with a full listing.
TT-(Moderator) 1,147 #4 Posted February 6, 2012 If you can't find information online, pay a visit to a Kohler dealer. Just because all of the information can't be found on the internet doesn't mean it doesn't exist - it just might have missed the transition from paper. :handgestures-thumbup:
