Mykol610 2 #1 Posted January 24, 2012 I have a 1057 with a Harbor Freight clone in it. I know, I'm not using the origional kohler but I'm just playing to see what works. I'm having a couple issues with it. It runs great, very strong, doesn't smoke or anything but after about 45 minutes or so (depending on weather), it starts to chug & die out. I usually run at 3/4-full throttle. It has gas and oil but I'm wondering if it could be overheating or something. It'll chug out and die but after about half an hour or so, it'll start right back up with no problems. Sometimes, I can get it to immediately start back up but can only run at 1/4-1/2 throttle. I have 10W30 oil in it. I don't know what the problem is and if it could be an easy fix, that'll be great but I don't even know where to start cause it's not like I can time it on chugging out. Any help would be appreciated. it's the 13/14HP motor from Harbor Freight.
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #2 Posted January 24, 2012 Make sure the gas cap vent is working correctly and that there are no restrictions of any sort in the line, fuel valve, etc. If you have access to a spark tester - or by using an "extra" spark plug - check for spark immediately after it dies. (sounds more like fuel starvation to me though)
Retired Wrencher 5,817 #3 Posted January 24, 2012 :USA: I will ad my 2 cents in my experience with these tractors they are at times caked with mud and grass around the fly wheel and carb box area. The last one I did there was so much mud in that area u could not tell from the jug area or the starter plate. it was just one large caked blob. So this would effect the air flow and could case the engine to over heat. I hope this helps Gary B............................
Road-Track 39 #4 Posted January 25, 2012 Take a look at where you have the gas line/filter to the carb running. Make sure it is not touching or near any parts that might get HOT after running for 45 minutes.
Don1977 605 #5 Posted January 25, 2012 I have had a ignition coil to do what you describe, Heat up and cause the engine lose power, It would also foul out the plugs, the bad coil was on one side of a V-twin. Check the plug to see if it has a lot of black soot on it.
Flatheadpuller 6 #6 Posted January 25, 2012 After it chugs and dies pull the bowl drain and see if it has gas in the float bowl. The clones are jetted very lean, very lean. You can get jets for the carb from parsons racing. I run a clone gx390 on my sons pulling tractor. The fuel line is very small and routed very funny above the shroud. Make sure its not kinked. After you have run it for a while pull the plug out of it and see if it has any color on it. If its just white with no dark color at all its way lean and needs some jetting done. My sons "factory" spark plug was junk as well. I put a good ngk for the honda in it and have had no other problems. Alos check the valve lash. After it heats up you could be loosing lash if it was incorrectly set at the factory. Quality control on the clones is terrible.
