WHEEL HORSE BILL 7 #1 Posted January 18, 2012 Hi, Guys I bought a 416 hydro with plow and vac bagging system not running. It has a 16 horse onan engine which I hear are pretty good engines. I decided to buy it then brought it to someone who knows about these engines.I got it back today and i'm not happy with it due to no power why is that. Is there anything that I can do to make it have a little more power. It kinda bogs down at take off. I dont even want to know what would happen if I put a mowerdeck on it. Can anyone help. CTPATRIOT 12 #2 Posted January 18, 2012 First thing i'd do is bring it back to the who "knows about them".If you paid for him to get it running good already. They have good power when running correctly.
Forest Road 594 #3 Posted January 18, 2012 I'll second that. When Onans run right they rarely bog down.
Rollerman 290 #4 Posted January 18, 2012 Another plus, your gas will never go stale because it won't stay in the tank long. :hide:
Sparky-(Admin) 23,284 #5 Posted January 18, 2012 My 416 with an ONAN has all sorts of power and it has never bogged down. Are you sure its running on both cylinders? Mike...........
dcrage 630 #6 Posted January 18, 2012 So would this symtom be consistant with the "dreaded" Onan back cylinder valve guide going bad???
Sparky-(Admin) 23,284 #7 Posted January 18, 2012 So would this symtom be consistant with the "dreaded" Onan back cylinder valve guide going bad??? Might be. I've heard they will run without both of em firing. (I hope thats not the issue) Mike.........
Hydro 131 #8 Posted January 18, 2012 Yes they will. That's what mine did. Took her apart and there was the valve seat poped right out from the block. Zero compression on one cylinder. Started right away but I could tell something was up. Would still run and even throttle up to a point.

I was lookin thing over and found that the keyway on the motor/pto shaft was not there. does that make sence. one thing i've learned always look over the small stuff first.
