Wheel Horse 633 with Kohler K141 small bore engine

Recommended Posts

I am rebuilding my Kohler and it has the 2.875 bore. I have not been able to find a complete Stens kit for that bore size. Please let me know if I can get a 2.875 bore kit. The K141 also came in a 2.9375(2 15/16) bore size and kits with piston, rings, rod, gaskets, seals, etc. are available for 100 dollars on ebay. Does anyone know for sure if small and large bore K141 block castings are the same? If so, I will have my machinist bore engine 2.875 (After I get and measure piston) to fit the larger bore kit. Thanks

Welcome to Red Square.

Its a very good question and I cant give you an answer! I have a small bore Kohler tucked away on a shelf that I havent looked at in several years. Several years ago I looked for a piston for it and had no luck with aftermarket stuff and if I remember correctly genuine Kohler pistons are NLA as well.

Some day I intend to attempt to bore it to take the later piston, I havent actually managed to find anyone who has done it before but I'm hoping there is enough meat in the block to do so.

Brian Miller has this to say on his website:

QUOTE:

NOTE: The model K141 Kohler engine will need to be bored to 2.9375" (2-15/16") to accept this bigger piston and rings because the piston/rings for the 2-7/8" bore are no longer available.

END QUOTE

In reality neither of us have much to lose, unless we wnt to spend years searching for a NOS genuine piston, its really the only option that we have.

Hope this helps a little...

Mike, Thanks for the info. I just ordered a complete aftermarket rebuild kit from Kevin on Fleabay. It comes with a rod. My rod plastigaged at .0030 clearance rod to crank pin(with floss located between top of rod with crank at TDC and cap bolts torqued to 200 inch pound).Max is supposed to be .0025. Big end journal checks .0007 out of round and max out of round is speced at .0005. To save cost of regrind and to avoid driving all over the place to get my crank ground, I decided to just go with a new stock rod and use the crank.Surface of crank journal is smooth and has no gouging as is. Will plastigage at the wear limit I hope with the new rod. I will let you know how the 2 15/16 boring goes. If it breaks out or blows out after I put the engine in service, I guess I will chuck it up to a learning experience. Rick
