14 vs 16???

Recommended Posts

CTPATRIOT

I plan to get a WH with either a 14 or 16hp Kohler, when i can afford one.Any reason not to with a 16?I don't see as many around. What engine would have better long term parts support?Maybe i'm worrying to much....

All big block Kohlers have the same parts availability, till you jump into the 18HP K361 single.....but it is the "black sheep" of Kohler singles.

Around here you don't see as many K341 16HP's either, they are a desirable engine for the GT pullers & those of us that like to hear that K341 thump.

Also Wheel Horse didn't use the K321 14HP in as many models.

Nothing wrong with them, I'd say the differance in price between a 14 HP & 16 HP rig was pretty marginal & buyers leaned towards the bigger engine.

If I came across the right one or the right deal....I wouldn't pass on a 14 Horse.

Yes if you get the chance to buy a 16hp do it, lots of the parts are 16hp only, but some parts do interchange with the smaller engines, I have a few of both, and both are good engines, but you can't beat a few extra ponies.

Is there a list of what WH's came with 14 and 16 Kohler singles?

Hydro

I have both. The 14 is the exact same block as the 16. The bore diameter is the difference. The reason I have both is because I wanted the newest latest Hydro I could get with a Kohler engine and that was the 314H, 1997, last year for the Magnum engine. After acquiring that and cutting grass with a 48" deck I decided I would like to have the "Big Thumper" so I kept my eyes open for a 16Hp. I found a 416-8 with low hours and towed that home too. I have just completed switching the engines and have added a 520 front end, gear reduction steering and hubs for the front wheels . The 14 was not strong enough for the 44" 2 stage blower I have.

If you check out the Brian Miller Tractor Pulling Website there is a wealth of info on these engines. Apparently the 14 is a more efficient engine than the 16 as the piston if more offset in the 16 but it's still two more Hp. They both run great but I like that big 16. If you can also try to get a Kohler Carburetor...much better than the Walboro. :twocents-02cents:

Did they make 416's with Kohler and Onan's?

Hydro

Yes. The Onan began in 1988 or somewhere right around there if I am not mistaken and it was around that same year the 16 Kohler ended. Other Kohlers like the 12 & 14 were available after that. The bigger engines used were the Onans. People on this site will debate the Onan engines and in fact there are lots of old posts on their pros and cons :confusion-confused: but everyone has their favorites and it would be a dull world if everyone chose the same thing. :twocents-02cents:

Go to Wheel Horse Picture Gallery and choose the Model list 84 to present or go back from 84 and prior. You should find all the models. You can also take those model numbers and go on the Toro website to find drawings and specs on some of the newer models. That way you can narrow down what you are looking for. :eusa-think:

"The 14 is the exact same block as the 16".

Gary, the 14 and the 16 are NOT the same block, the 16hp has 10 head bolts, and the 10, 12, and 14hp only have 9 head bolts, the 16hp is a block all by it's self.

Sorry CT Patriot, thanks Kelly. I thought the block was essentally the same except for the bore diameter being more offset to accomodate the bigger piston. :hide:

I just love the old K series. I had a 416-8 (1985 or 86) and it was a torque machine. I also have a 14hp K series on my 1969 Economy and you just cannot kill that motor!

IMHO..... the Kohler K and Magunum 16's are the best engines to come out of Kohler, they are simple and rugged and can be run hard without so much as a whimper.... Hey wait a minute.... that sounds just like the tractor its installed in. :handgestures-thumbup: I do have both and have run a K 14 horse against a 42" single stage blower and its fine, I have never had a single stage blower hooked up to a 16 to see if there was that much of a difference.---might be something I have to try.
