Carter N #22 Carb Questions

Recommended Posts

Duluth

I bought a 1974 Wheel Horse B80, it has a Kohler K181 8hp engine with a Carter model N carb size 22.

I can get it to run for 3 or 4 seconds, but then it dies. I figure I need to rebuild the carb. I'm not an experienced knuckle buster, so I'm not sure if I just need a basic carb kit, or if I should be replacing the high speed needle, float, etc.

Also, I may be over thinking this, but I've read the Kohler came with a variety of carbs, so I am not sure mine is original so I am not sure which part numbers I need. Any advice and/or part numbers and/or best places to buy these parts would be appreciated.

The Carter is very common on Kohler engines, rebuild instructions are in the manual.

The rebuild kit will contain everything that you should need, new needle valve and seat and the gaskets.

Normally you shouldnt need to replace anything else. Sometime you will find the throttle shaft has wear that will require fixing, but if that is ok, then its is a fairly simple clean and reassemble procedure.

Make sure there are no holes in the float. The HS needle should be fine but make sure it is clean. There are tiny holes through the sides and it is hollow, so it needs to be clean inside. Normally an overnight soak in Berrymans carb cleaner, and then a blow through with aerosol carb clean will clean everything else out.

The other place to watch is the tiny progession holes in the carb body, they are little holes into the bore of the carb, right next to the throttle plate. Again the overnight soak, followed by a blast of aerosol should clean them out.

Take a look at the manual, and if you need clarification on something, just shout.
