Jim B 0 #1 Posted January 12, 2012 Hello all, New to this forum as I am a new Wheel horse owner. I bought my Son (2 1/2 yrs) an L157 for christmas. It took a week of up all nights but I got it done just in time for christmas. It was in bad shape and an attempt to modify sometime many years ago left it in bad shape for a factory restoration. But it was a perfect canidate for a kids play/pull tractor. I had to split the transmission case because it didnt want to shift when I got it home. Much to my dismay I found the trans full of water/oil. The gears are useable but most of the bearings were shot. I had to clean EVERY needle bearing with emerycloth so I could get it to work for Christmas. I need to replace all of the bearings and seals. I have not had much luck finding the bearing online. Many are discontinued. Does anyone know where I can find these bearings at a resonable price? or does anyone know the cross to a fedral mogule part number? I have all of the wheel horse numbers but no luck so far on finding parts that a working class guy can afford. Thanks, Jim B
sorekiwi 761 #2 Posted January 12, 2012 At the top of the "transmission" section there is a sticky thread "Bearing cross refererance chart". It will give you the Timken numbers for all the needle rollers. They are all available through your local bearing house, the only ones that arent available (except through Toro) are the ball bearings each side of the diff. Most of the needle bearings are $6 or $7 apiece. I order mine through Motion Industries or Applied. Hopefully you wont need the 2 ball bearings, if you do they are about $70 apiece from Toro. Jim B 0 #13 Posted January 16, 2012 Thanks to all for the info and good words. I was able to order most of the bearings from Motion industries. I will need the big ball bearings that support the differental. Hopefully I will be able to figure out a solution. When the bearings arrive I will press the big bearings off and see what I can come up with at one of the local supply houses. Hopefully it won't involve machine work! Does anyone know what the cross for wheel horse# 1303 and 1518 is? 1303 is a seal and 1518 is a small needle bearing that goes on one of the gear sets between the main shaft and what I think is the reverse gear. The bearing is good but since my Son may enter in the youth tractor pulls I want the gearbox good and strong. Does anyone have any experience with a Commando v8? I have my eye on one for a similar redo and for a pulling tractor for dad. Thought it would be cool for dad and son to have a 'horse. Are the trannies strong enough to take that kind of abuse? The 157 seems WAYYYYY over built! I love that. Thanks, Jim
dclarke 4,083 #14 Posted January 16, 2012 Jim, I have 1303 crossing to a NAPA number 7408 and 1518 is a B108, you may have to get the bearing from Motion industries. Welcome aboard, nice job you're doing.
bowtieguy 334 #15 Posted January 17, 2012 Good choice on a WH for the little guy.....I have triplet grandsons and yep, I've got 3 LR's for them. I just replaced the bearings in a couple WH trannys...about 25 bucks (excluding the big bearing SOL)... I do have a source for the big bearing if you do not find anything. My bearing source is IBTINC.com and they have a bearing that I think might work...OD is a big large @ 2.5130"..ID is 1.4994"..width is 0.6440".....I don't know the bearing mfgr but the bearing # is 1496 (probably IBT p/n)..BUT price is still too high ..22 bucks each! I will assume you are talking about the WH roller bearing # 1533. PS...I chose a WH 704 for me ....so I can ride with the boys too~~~

Kelly 1,033 #17 Posted January 17, 2012 I can't help you on the bearings, but can say the Commando V8 is a Vert shaft tractor, and although it does have the early cast trans, it's probably not the best choice for a pulling tractor.
