JMW 3 #1 Posted January 11, 2012 Hey guys..I've been away for about a year doing the divorce custody thing but now I can finally get back to my sons pulling project. We are putting together a c160 with an older 12hp kohler s/g engine. The engine is in good shape and just needs some gaskets and a tune up.I have the head off and was wondering if it is worth switching to an LP head? I know that the compression will be higher and I'll gain a little more power but not sure if it will be worth the added expense or if it will add any unexpected problems?Any and all advice or opinions are welcome. Thanks,Jim
joel_400 59 #2 Posted January 12, 2012 If you can get one cheap I wouldnt see why not, however they normally go for $150 plus on evil bay. You can always have yours milled and run a .031 copper head gasket for an increase in compression. Check out Brian millers website for some more info on getting more out of your kohler. Always feel free to message me also, you never know maybe I can help you too. Joel
Flatheadpuller 6 #3 Posted January 12, 2012 If its a governed stocker yes the lp head is a good addition. As are a good set of valve springs. Ecspecially if your governed at say 4000rpm. With a stock cam you normally take .040-.050 off the head with a stock head gasket. On an open rpm engine I wouldnt run the lp head because of how restrictive it is in flow. It will increase compression wich will build torque and hp. BUt works much better on a stocker. I have a milled head, with a 18hp cam and vogel springs in my stocker at 4000rpm. Kelly 1,033 #6 Posted January 14, 2012 Pull the head before you buy one, lots of the early engines have the heart shaped chamber in the headand a LP head will do very little over that style.
