kthack657 328 #1 Posted January 9, 2012 So I purchased a 701 Last year, and for those of you who dont remember, it was a candidate for restoration. With a new transmission installed last year, and all engine seals replaced, I was able to bring her out to the Dover, PA show. I was still missing a few pieces at that point, but was well on my way with a fuel pump from Warren and the rebuild kit from Brian. So My husband was looking on Ebay and spotted the two pieces I need to really restore it right; my belt cover and the generator double pully (have the engine pully). So once the weather gets warmer, it will be on!! I hope to have it done for the Wheel Horse Show. Once I start, there will be plenty of pictures, I just wish I had the belt cover in hand, Im starting to get the itch :)
rmaynard 16,363 #2 Posted January 9, 2012 Can't wait to see how she's coming along. Glad you're finally getting that belt cover. Those things are as hard to find as an honest politician. :)
speedyleedy 205 #3 Posted January 9, 2012 Good luck on your restoration, keep looking iam sure you will find everthing you need to complete your tractor! :)
Suburban 550 28 #4 Posted January 9, 2012 Good to see you got all the missing pieces, Karen. Put mine all back together yesterday with some pieces still in primer. It's going to get a full restoration but because of lack of time and money to do it the way I want it done, it's gonna have to wait til next year. Can't wait to see yours all redone. JC 1965 1,532 #5 Posted January 9, 2012 Best of luck with your restoration. I think the 701's are really good locking old tractors. I've seen several that have been restored and they sure catch your eye. :thumbs2:
Sparky-(Admin) 23,277 #6 Posted January 9, 2012 I regret selling my 701. Good to hear yours is coming along and dont forget to snap a few pics for us. Mike........
can whlvr 994 #7 Posted January 11, 2012 just curios what method you ended up using to strip the paint
kthack657 328 #8 Posted January 11, 2012 I havent started stripping the paint yet, but have a method in mind, there is a marine paint stripper I will be using and after it is put on, I will be placing the pieces in a trash bag to set for a while since there are at least 3 known layers on it
kthack657 328 #9 Posted January 13, 2012 So I thought my parts would be here today, and I checked on Ebay, the parts havent shipped yet, I know I dont need the parts, but I want to assess the condition. UUUg the suspense is killing me
WHEEL HORSE BILL 7 #10 Posted January 15, 2012 I just picked one up yesterday for the sum of $25.00 I can't belieave it. can I see a picture of yours just to see how nice it looks.
kthack657 328 #11 Posted January 16, 2012 Bill, I have old pics, and it is not in that great a shape, the person before the person I bought it from was not nice...the tranny was welded to the frame, it was first painted orange then back to red...and I think it had the wrong seat. I can definately post some, but it will look alot nicer at the WH show this year
kthack657 328 #12 Posted June 4, 2012 So I have had nothing but bad luck with my 701, until now. The belt guard and starter generator never showed up, I am still complaining to the USPS...by the way NEVER use Parcel Post for shipping items...but on to the good information now. Thanks to JDog I was able to get another tractor and between the two I am putting together a pretty tractor. I still have to finish up the hood, fenders and the double belt guard, but I figured I would post some pics of the project so far...

Ken B 3,189 #14 Posted June 4, 2012 That is looking real sharp! I hear ya on the failings of the U.S.P.S. With all of the cutbacks they have gone thru they have lost almost all ability to get my packages shipped to my house. I now dread it when I need parts that I can't find locally. kthack657 328 #18 Posted June 4, 2012 Bob, dont worry she will be there along with the smoked sausage...we also have another surprise for the camp fire...I cant wait for the show, and neither can my two four legged children...they will be accompanying me this year as long as they continue to behave. Thank you to everyone else out there...and Steve, we have the belt guard, it needs to be painted but it is stripped and looking good. I have had to paint inbetween the storms, the rain this year is starting to get on my nerves...lol I just hope the hood and fenders turn out good too
