radarme 15 #1 Posted January 3, 2012 I'm ready to buy my first Wheel Horse with intent to do a full restoration. I've found a C 121 auto within a few hours drive and plan to go look at it tomorrow. what do you guys think. With it being an auto, what kind of pulling ability do these machines have? I was originally planning on buying a manual model, but there are just not many options in this part of the country. I have a zero turn Gravely for mowing so this one will be doing utility work and the 'heavy lifting'. Here is the ad.... the guy said it has no rusting issues and the engine does not smoke. http://nashville.craigslist.org/grd/2777643194.html
can whlvr 994 #2 Posted January 3, 2012 i dont want to rain on your parade in any way,but i will give some advice,it is impairative to get this tractor fully warmed up,like driveing it for a good period, not just a put around the drive,if the hydro is good they are greatif the hydro is weak run like hell and look for an 8 speed,i have 2 sundstrands and an eaton so im no stranger too hydros, but if its your first sometimes there is less greif with an 8 speed, even when they need bearings inside its doable with help from guys here, theres even videos, but your on your own with a bad hydro pump, but if its solid after a good warm up they are great tractors,it will pull anything an 8 speed will,so good luck, and look at the oil in the rear end too, theres a dip stick under the seat,it should be very clean
radarme 15 #3 Posted January 3, 2012 Great advise. So ater running it around for 5 or 10 minutes, what should I be looking for to tell if the hydro is weak? just a sluggish feeling? thanks!
shootinok 15 #4 Posted January 3, 2012 I hope its good! I bought my C-121 with the auto trans 1/2 taken apart. The PO cracked it open then gave up, so I had no choice but dig in to it. This is my first Wheelhorse and with a little shade-tree mechanic ability and a LOT of time on here and studying the Sundstrand manual, I was able to put it back together. I think this thing will pull my 12 x 16 shed around the yard if I tried. It's is one strong machine! Next year i'll be looking for an engine rebuild as he's started to smoke pretty good now - but this hydro will probably outlast the steel on mine. ' Good Luck -
