scrap yards

So yesterday a buddy of mine were at the scrap yard and found a poor wheelhorse that met the claw. I must say it makes me sad to see that people throw away stuff nicer than what I usually bring home! Haha I did manage to get some parts though. I got a nice 42" dozer blade, mounting bracket, and clevis hitch with all the lifting hardware. All for around 30 bucks! Too bad the tractor had been destroyed by the claw or I would have brought it all home though!

Yeah - but stop and think how many of them were scrapped before we started paying attention.

I once had a local "junkie" tell me he hauled three Wheel Horses "with the rounded front ends" for scrap about a week before I told him I was looking for them. :jaw:

I see tons of all brands in the scrap yards, some in good shape, I seen a few weeks back a very nice looking 60's JD round fender with plow and deck, paint was very nice, had the orig. seat cover still in good shape, it had a dealer tag hanging on the steering wheel, and it had a broken rod in the 8hp, I tried to buy it but the owner of the yard was there that day and he wanted $500 for it, but at least he took it home, I drag at least 1 tractor a month home from the scrap yards, and lots of parts off others, you can't save them all, if we did we wouldn't have the RARE/Hard to find items, that are so much fun looking for, but yes good stuff does get junked all the time, it's a shame, but it is life.

A lot of yards wont let you "wander" through anymore, I guess they are worried about lawsuits or pilfering.

Theres one near me that lets me stroll thru the junk tractor section. I was dropping off copper wire and in the distance saw a Wheel Horse stuffed in with a bunch of other scrapped tractors. I had bought cast wheelweights off this guy before for scrap value ($20 for the pair) so he was fine with me looking and buying a tractor. Unfortunately it was a 211-5 or something along those lines so I passed. He actually had three of the small vertical shaft machines but nothing that would interest me.

One of these days.................

I've dragged home 4 or 5 from my local scrapyard.

The last one I got was an 876 that would have been a good tractor before someone rolled it out of their pick up track. The steering wheel and hood were toast, and the seat was missing. The hydro was shot, but it took 10 minutes to get the motor running. Also got a really nice gas tank, and then all the bits and pieces. I got my moneys worth!

Well old tractors are like old cars, a few years ago I used to pick up parts and whole cars from the 70's to use for Racing, well those days are gone, now it's far and few between finding the old iron, now it's mostly front drive cars, very few rear drive come in the yards any more, tractors are the same the old iron is mostly gone, for every one old Garden tractor, I see 20 throw away Lawn tractors, I still rob parts off some of the newer tractors, steering wheels, seats, and other trinkets, but days are changing, todays junk is what was bought 10/15 years ago.

And unfortunately most of it was junk when it was new :eusa-doh: .

A few months ago, I was in a scrap yard picking parts off a C-165 that was beyond repair. One day, when I went back for another small part, someone had just brought in a C-120 with a plow, wheel weights, and chains. The body was in good shape, but the engine was seized, probably just from sitting too long. I asked how much they wanted for it, and couldn't believe they only asked $100, complete. I rushed to the ATM, got my trailer, and rushed back before someone else got it. Freed up engine with diesel fuel and Marvel's Miracle Oil. That's my spring time project for the new year. Hope to have some pictures then. Have to check the yards often. Can't believe what some people throw away.

there is no metal recycle yard around me that lets you take or buy anything,it an old tractor yard or car parts place you can,but its definatly insurance reasons, our local scrap guys dont exist anymore, for environmental reasons, storing old cars and tractors is a lost trade around here, everything goes into a shredded at the one i go to

The only scrap yard/recycle yard near me has a one way policy.

Meaning the shredder is the only way out.

Never seen any Wheel Horse's yet, but many a Simplicity & a few Deere's

My local yard has wised up to the demand for old tractors. They will set them off to the side and ask stupid money for them- which usually means they rust away to nothing and get crunched anyway. I've only seen three Wheel Horses, and they all actually sold. More than I would pay for them, but still a good thing.

I found my first wheel horse (1960 suburban 400) not at the scrap yard, but my nieghbor 2 doors up from me had wheeled it out to the curb for the garbage truck. Lucky for me i came along before he did.
