copperhead 38 #1 Posted January 1, 2012 So I pull the carb off my B80 today and give it a good cleaning and replace everything that came in the repair kit….. Get it all back together and while it does run…the plug is getting all fouled up with oli..I had it running before I "fixed" it today and while it didn’t run great…the plug was staying clean… What the heck could I have done?….My kit didn’t come with the gasket that goes between the carb and the block….so I used the old one and it may be leaking a little…Could this be the problem…?… I’ll be pulling it all apart again tomorrow and making a new gasket….I’m gonna pull the head too to try and see what’s up….Anyone have any ideas?..Thanks
Kelly 1,033 #2 Posted January 1, 2012 Are you sure it's oil? and not black soot from being to rich?
copperhead 38 #3 Posted January 1, 2012 Are you sure it's oil? and not black soot from being to rich? no...pretty sure it's oil...it soaks up into a paper towel...and it's not gas..
copperhead 38 #4 Posted January 1, 2012 Well this doesn’t look good…Pulled the head this morning and found this … Piston definitely has a little play in it…Funny thing is it barely smokes…I guess I didn’t notice anything amiss because I didn’t run it much until my tuneup…It still doesn’t run bad or smoke much…but I’m thinking nothing good can come from ignoring the issue.. Probably will pull the engine and start reading up on replacing pistons and rings…Guess I'd better plan on shoveling if we get any snow this winter.... . stevebo-(Moderator) 8,538 #5 Posted January 1, 2012 Why not clean it up and put it back together, check the float level on the carb and run it?
smoreau 658 #6 Posted January 1, 2012 Why not clean it up and put it back together, check the float level on the carb and run it? I agree!
Kelly 1,033 #7 Posted January 1, 2012 I've seen WAY worse, run good, just keep a eye on the oil level, my sons tractor he is using this winter smokes but runs great, but better than a shovel. To be honest, I don't see a oil issue there, almost looks to clean like to much gas washing it, normally a oil burner will have thick tar like deposits on everything. copperhead 38 #8 Posted January 1, 2012 I'm new to all this...I don't understand the part about gas "washing it" and how adjusting the float level might...It's hard to see in the picture but oil or a mixture of oil and gas was pooled up on the piston when I pulled the head
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #9 Posted January 1, 2012 Shot in the dark here, but check the oil level. (smell the oil too) If it's over-full, you might have a bad fuel pump diaphragm that's allowing raw gas to enter the crankcase. Gasoline-thinned oil will suck up past the rings and can foul out the spark plug.
copperhead 38 #10 Posted January 1, 2012 The oil level may be a little high..But I might have overfilled it when changed it...But there is definately a "gassy" smell to it and it seems diluted...It doesn't smell anywhere near like the new oil in the bottle....I will drain/refill, check the float level ..Can I check the float level without removing the carb?...Thanks for the help.... Callen 64 #11 Posted January 1, 2012 Does it quit running?
copperhead 38 #12 Posted January 1, 2012 Does it quit running? No it never quit running...but I haven't ever had it running for more than 10 minutes or so..
copperhead 38 #13 Posted January 2, 2012 Drained the oil...or should I say gas/oil mixture....Not going to refill it until I pull the carb again... Something I did must have caused this problem....There was no gas in the old oil when I changed it.....
ol550 830 #14 Posted January 2, 2012 What kind of problems were you having before the 'tune up'? Don't rule out the fuel pump as TT mentioned. I have had new pumps leak. Mike

Mike I've only had the tractor about 1 month..the engine is a replacement out of a different machine..It hadn't been run in awhile and was having idle/throttle problems so I figured I'd clean the carb...When I was messing with it before I took the carb off(it was running but rough)...I pulled the plug(new) a few times and it didn't show any signs of oil/gas on it...I haven't touched the pump
Buzz 502 #16 Posted January 3, 2012 Why don't you download this Kohler service manual and read up on the carburetor. It tells you how to adjust the float and gives a good exploded view of the carb. http://www.kohlereng...pdf/tp_2379.pdf Good luck.
HorseDrawn 1 #17 Posted January 4, 2012 I'm second on the fuel pump. If the motors been sitting the pump diaphram was probably fine right off but once its gotten wet and worked its coming apart. Very common on something thats been sitting and the pump diaphram dried out. Less fuel to the carb will make it run bad and it will loose its prime if it sits a day or so. copperhead 38 #18 Posted January 8, 2012 Pulled the carb again…blew everything out and reset the float(didn’t make any adjustments)….Also pulled/opened the fuel pump …nothing seemed torn or broken….Put it all back and re-filled the oil So far so good….It’s running…not smoking….and the plug is staying dry….Carb still needs some adjusting …I ordered new points and a condenser….Hopefully any future work will yield better results.. Was 50+ degrees in the sun today....Maybe I should be more worried about needing to mow the lawn than needing to plow the driveway... :chores-mowlawn:
