71_Bronco 1,072 #1 Posted December 28, 2011 I have on my motor a carter carb that I would like to rebuild for when I put the motor into the RJ. The carb came off a K91, and is clearly marked "carter" on it. Is there anywhere online that has a details "how to" for rebuilding? I don't want to take the thing too far apart and not get it back together correctly. I am going to get the rebuild kit for it, which by the look of it is only like 3 or 4 parts. Can anybody shine some light on this topic? Thanks!
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #2 Posted December 28, 2011 Pinned to the top of the "Engines" forum (where you have this posted) is the topic titled "ID, Repair and Adj Kohler Carburators" that will lead you to Brian Miller's website. Reserve a few hours and look over his website well. He doesn't have much posted on 8hp & smaller Kohlers, but the basics still apply. Leaving his site without learning something about Kohler engines would be like leaving an all-you-can-eat buffet hungry. There are also instructions and information provided in the OEM Kohler service manual (TP-2379) Most carb "kits" - as they are generically called - consist of nothing more than a few gaskets/seals and possibly a needle and seat set for the float. These are the basic parts required to remove the float bowl, clean the carb, and reassemble - without any major repairs. Throttle and choke shaft kits, floats, adjustment screws, jets, etc. would need purchased separately - as needed. By the way - unless you disassemble a carb with a 4lb hammer, you can't "take the thing too far apart and not get it back together correctly". :ychain:
71_Bronco 1,072 #3 Posted December 28, 2011 Thanks TT. I have looked at that quite a few times, but wasn't sure if the smaller carbs were anything special. I don't remember where I read it, but there was a really nice step-by-step in replacing a blown head gasket for the small motors, not sure if it is the same guy who did that one or not. And no, I will not be using a 4 pound hammer LOL. What about paint and dirt / dust on the carb? How should I go about taking the paint off without hurting it, and removing any caked on dirt / dust? See this post: A few days soaking in that and the carb should be very clean. You can also use paint stripper, dental picks, small wire brushes on Dremel tools, etc. to clean up the outside of the carb.
