Shuboxlover 481 #1 Posted December 27, 2011 Can someone walk me through the steps needed to bench test a motor? I have a wire coming off the regulator, a wire coming off the coil. What do I do with these. Then I have the solenoid and starter circuit. What do I do there? I don't really want to yank a motor out of one of my tractors to test it, so I thought about bolting it to my work bench. I have what looks like a barely used K301 that I want to see how well it runs.... Thanks!!
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #2 Posted December 28, 2011 Gear drive starter, not starter /generator, I presume? Solenoid bolted securely to the engine? If so......... You need a cable from battery negative post to engine block. A cable from the battery positive post to one of the large posts on the solenoid. A cable from the other large post on the solenoid to the post on the starter. (sounds like this might already be there) A jumper wire to temporarily apply power to the small post on the solenoid to engage the starter. If the existing wire on the positive post of the ignition coil is long enough to reach the same large post on the solenoid where the battery positive cable is attached, you can attach it there for ignition power. (disconnect to stop engine) The wire from the rectifier/regulator B+ terminal can be twisted together with the wire to the coil for the test.
Shuboxlover 481 #3 Posted December 28, 2011 PERFECT Terry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank-You, I got it going. It runs really good, however.....I can hear a noticeable ticking, I think it's coming from the valvetrain. Do you think it could be a sticky valve? If so, how do I know for sure? rmaynard 16,333 #4 Posted December 28, 2011 If it's running good, I wouldn't thinks it's a sticky valve. I would pull the breather cover and check the valve gaps. Reset them if necessary to the recommended settings and see if it helps. Every K-series I have seen had a little valve noise.
Shuboxlover 481 #5 Posted December 28, 2011 Thanks Bob, I'll give that a shot and let you know if that helped.
Shuboxlover 481 #6 Posted December 29, 2011 I checked the valve tappets tonight and sure enough the exhaust valve tappet was quite a bit out of adjustment (to large of gap) which makes sense because I thought the ticking noise was coming from the exhaust side. Gapped it to spec and VIOLA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS BABY IS A RUNNER!!!!!!!!!!!!! starts INSTANTLY, and purrs like a kitten!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for the help guys!
