krazy_horse 59 #1 Posted December 21, 2011 Will the starters interchange between an 8,12.14 horse Kohler? Thanks! Jim
Trouty56 567 #2 Posted December 21, 2011 Not sure about the 8hp...but the 10, 12, 14, and 16 are the same units I think. The 8hp might have more teeth on the gear...IDK...I don't think it is the same.
krazy_horse 59 #3 Posted December 23, 2011 The reason I am asking is my starter is dragging on an 8 Horse I have. I have several bookmarked on FLEA-Bay, One 8 horse and the rest are for the larger engines, I dont want to buy one and pay shipping and it not fit. Please let me know if you know for sure. Thank You
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #4 Posted December 23, 2011 The K-181 starter has to have the mount on the top. The only big-block starters that are similar would be the low-mount versions and the drive gear is different on those. Do you have any "old-school" auto electric shops in your area? Perhaps your starter could be repaired. Here's another option: http://www.dbelectri...es-sab0050.aspx

KC9KAS 4,744 #7 Posted December 23, 2011 I too am looking for a starter for a 12 hp KOHLER K301S. On mine, the shaft is broken where the bendix drive mounts to the starter motor shaft.
