can whlvr 994 #1 Posted December 17, 2011 so i took the 1990 12 hp magnum in to the shop, they measured it and while im waiting on parts i thought i will get ahead and i lapped the valves(took the block back for now)sand blasted the block, hot wter blasted after, let dry and primed with engine primer, should i grind or sand off the paint where the gaskets go,i would think that i should, they paint them assembled, but i wanted to do it before it rusted waiting for parts, and my other question is do i need special lubes when putting back together,i allways have used engine oil,and worked clean, which is why i want to paint it before its assembled then a final coat when its together, she will be clean like new.is there another place anyone knows to get the rebuild manual thats got clear pics, the one from kohler isnt that good,or is that what they all look like? sorekiwi 761 #2 Posted December 17, 2011 I dont know what your machineshop is doing to your block, Don, but if they havent finished machining it yet I wouldnt paint it yet. After it has been honed the block will require a thorough cleaning to remove all the honong grit, and that process wont do your nice shiny paint any favors. Where the gaskets seat should be bare clean metal. I sand it with emery to get the old gasket material and rust off it, then a final wash to remove all traces of dirt and abrasive residue. You can mask off the machined surfaces, or else just spray it all with paint then wipe off the machined surfaces with a rag and mineral spirits. Engine oil will be fine for assembly. I usually use assembly lube on the crank, cam/lifters, and the cam pin but I am sure that engine oil would work fine. The assembly lube I have is made by Permatex and should be avalable at an autoparts store. Splash lubed engines are a little more forgiving than engines with an oil pump which sometimes have some issues getting a prime for the first start up. I have a bound copy of the Kohler (K Series) manual, and the pictures are clearer than any of the online copies of the same manual that I have seen. I have never seen what the Magnum manual looks like
can whlvr 994 #3 Posted December 17, 2011 thanks mike,i have primed it,and am going to leave it at that, hope it doesnt destroy the primer, then get her machined and then ill do 2 coats, ive looked around on the computer and none of the manual pics are clear, but i dont think im gonna need pics, its just nice to have, this is the second full rebuild(well close to full)didnt take the valve guides ouy, this engine only had 350 hours, ran good when torn down just smoked,so im more confident this time, the first one is running still and runs good too :omg:
