1988 312-8 steering

Hi Guys:

New problem developed I need your help.

I am hoping someone will know how to adjust the steering on my 312-8.

The steering moves full from center to right.

It does not do the same when truning left.

About half way to full left the gear on the steering shaft #25 skips on the lower shaft gear face # 15.

Can this be adjusted?

If so how?

Check the lower steering support and make sure it isn't broke. You might have to loosen the bolts, or it might be blatantly obvious:

This is a common problem on these models. If yours checks out OK, check the dash assembly just behind the battery. If it's cracked/broken where the steering shaft passes through, it will allow the upper shaft / pinion gear to move upward and away from the sector gear.

If both of those are good, you might need to add shims at the back of the lower steering shaft - between the lower support and the cotter pin. That will "pull" the lower steering shaft / sector gear tighter into the pinion gear.

Thanks again TT!

I checked behind the battery and the bushing that passes through the braket had dropped out of place.

It does not look original it has a tapped hole in it 1/4"- 20 and had a bolt in it which was too short and did not make contact with the shaft.

I rounded off the end of a bolt.

I them drilled through the tapped hole and dimpled the shaft so the bolt would act like a "keyway" and hold tight.

And then bolted it up tight!

The lower steering shaft had the original cotter pin in it and was a b*tch to reach.

It was flattened out pretty flat.

I added a washer that I had to drill out to fit over the 3/4" shaft and had to pry the shaft from the front to get the cotter pin back in.

Thanks again.

P.S The steering is perfect now lock to lock with smooth and easy, even with the added weight of the snow blower in the raised position!!!
