Stigian 1,234 #1 Posted December 4, 2011 Hi Guy's, this may sound like a daft question but what engine should a C-175 have in it? I know it's a twin and maybe it should have Kohler, but.. Which model Kohler should it be? Is it a KT17 or a Magnum 18? are any parts interchangeable between the 2? Ta muchly chaps
Jim_M 179 #2 Posted December 4, 2011 Ian, It would have come from the factory with a KT17. There are very few parts interchangeable between those two engines. Jim
Stigian 1,234 #3 Posted December 4, 2011 Thanks for that Jim, I feared it would be a KT17 rather than a Magnum 18.. Oh well.. I have been offered this engine.. rather cheap shall we say, and I was hoping to mix and match parts with the rather knackered M-18 I bought in kit form a while back.. The reason it's rather cheap.... The engine has busted a rod and knocked a small hole through the casing, but still starts and runs well on 1 cylinder!!! Right chap's here's the deal if your interested. I am willing to still buy the engine and sell on any parts other members need at cost price (I'm not interested in making money out of it). The only parts missing according to the seller are the fuel pump and the twin coil pack thingys, but I'm going to want to keep the air filter if it's smaller than the one on my M-20 Let me know chaps as the seller is going to call me probably tomorrow to find out if I want the engine or not.. Stigian 1,234 #4 Posted December 4, 2011 Just had a call from the seller, he can tell me the engine is a Kohler but no model numbers or anything, so...... I have bought it anyway just in case any of you fine chaps need any cheap spares. It should be here by next weekend
baerpath 517 #5 Posted December 4, 2011 Ian The engine cases are the same. Magnums just don't have the holes for the points drilled out even the intake on a magnum has a coil mount on it. KT and magnum jugs are the same also unless you go to the 20hp (it has one more fin than a 18). Duane
Stigian 1,234 #6 Posted December 5, 2011 Thanks for that Duane, though I'm a little confused now. If I have read that right (just woken up so possibly not) I can transplant the gut's from the KT into the magnum case, but I would have to use the Magnum electrickery? baerpath 517 #7 Posted December 5, 2011 Almost, the cases themselves are the same so that works for the hole. The magnum is preassure lubed so it has oil holes drilled in the crank for the rods. Jugs are interchangable and I'm not sure on the pistons themselves. I'll check with a freind who does Kohler rebuilds all the time on the crank and rods. Also depends if it's a series 1 (spash lube) or 2 (preassure lube). Duane .
baerpath 517 #8 Posted December 5, 2011 http://www.lotus-equip.com/PB150.htm for piston info http://www.lotus-equip.com/Part%20Bulletins.htm jugs Hope that helps some Duane
Stigian 1,234 #9 Posted December 9, 2011 Thanks Duane you have been a great help Iv'e had a good look through the links you kindly posted and if I have got my parts numbers right Mahle pistons and posi-lock conn rods will fit both the Kt and the M18.. It also looks like the cylinder barrels (jugs?) are interchangeable... I wonder if the cams are interchangeable as well.. A few photo's.. The said engine.. A bit of a hole through the casing next to the rear cylinder. KT17 and M18 side by side.. The M18 has an oil pressure warning light switch thingy and an option (I think) to fit an oil filter.. Ah... Not on the KT... The only parts the M18 needs are a good pair of barrels and a camshaft.... Hhhmmm.... I wonder :)
Jim_M 179 #10 Posted December 9, 2011 Sorry Ian, didn't mean to lead you astray. For some reason I confused the KT17 with the K482. There are very few parts, if any, that will interchange between that engine and a Magnum.
