kpinnc 14,692 #5 Posted December 6, 2011 My hat is off to you for keeping it going, regardless of the engine you use. So many of these great machines rot away to nothing just waiting for the correct engine. None of my tractors were purchased by the "wheel horse police", so they don't get to say what I do with them. I've re-powered several tractors using whatever I had at the time, and it's nice to actually use the them for something other than a 500lb paper weight. You can always find the right engine eventually, and you can re-power one without modifying the original tractor. That way, when you find the right engine (if you're even looking for it) it's just a matter of swapping them out. Just mount your engine so that the PTO shaft is at the same height and relative position on the frame to original, and you're all set- IF the engine fits under the hood. The original 3-groove drive pulley that came on the 502 was used on many different models from the same era, and those pulleys show up on Ebay all the time. Of course, any 2.5 to 3-inch diameter v-belt pulley (with the correct bore ID for your engine) will probably get you rolling, but you'll need the 3-groove original for using attachments. Don't forget to attach the belt guard. Otherwise your clutch won't work properly, and that would be dangerous. Good luck! Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
keg 0 #6 Posted December 6, 2011 o yea belt guard the other thing it didnt come with lol im looking for one. this 502 needs a lot of work but like u said ide rather use it than it b laying around rusting away. i use my others all the time they are very hard workers in my garden,yard, and food plots at the hunting camp . i have a complete manual orderd for it im gonna start on it as soon as it comes in i can work on my 90.s model horses with my eyes closed but this 62 i know nothing about lol (not even how to remove the deck) yikes haha o but the rare thing she does have is a back rest were these normal? or an ad on? thanks all Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
rydogg 186 #7 Posted December 6, 2011 This is my 502 that I will be putting back together...you can use any motor you want but I would avoid cutting or modifying the hood since they are getting harder to find and more expensive. If you want to make it appear correct a Tecumseh H60 is pretty similar to the Lauson 5.5hp motor that was originally in it, your honda would be a better option for a worker since the Tecumseh motors can be a little more difficult to keep in tune. Sorry, I have no resto pictures I just got this in November so now I am searching for parts to put it back together. The back rest was an option.
