How Do Points Work?

Recommended Posts

71_Bronco

I am currently piecing together a motor for my RJ, and it has the bock of a K90, with some K91 parts added. One thing I noticed was the points system was different (the part that mounts to the block under the little rectangle cover). I cannot use the newer K91 points on the older K90 block, as that pin sticks out too far.

I was trying to use the K91 points, as they looked to be in better shape, however, they obviously wont work for reason stated.

Also, if someone can shine a light on the magneto / coil and how that works, I would be very grateful as well. It will help so much when I try to figure out how everything goes together.

And last question, I noticed when I was tearing the motors apart, that the wire that goes from the spark plug to the coil, poped out of the coil. I thought this was bad, but then I looked online, and it looks like that is normal?

Thanks allot! You guys are always so helpful!

I suggest a little reading. These pretty much cover just about every scenario used on a wheel Horse.

Very good reading info, and thank you very much for the links.

I just went out and looked at the point on my motor. It looks like the principles are the same (between the K90 and K91), however they are designed slightly differently. The K91 style uses a shorter pin that proturdes from the block, and the K90 is longer, Therefore I cannot use the K91 points on the K90. I was hoping to use the K91 points on the K90 cause they are in better shape, but obviously cannot.

As for the magneto & spark plug wire, it looks as though it is suppose to come apart like it does, so that isnt a concern any longer.

Thanks again for all the help!
