There's a wire that comes from the coil which should be connected to the key switch that is the kill wire. As long as that wire isn't grounded then the motor should have spark.

You can bypass all the safety switches by jumping the solenoid to use the starter start it. Use a screwdriver or pliers (anything metal that also insulates your hand) to connect the large post which should be connected the + side of the battery and "jump" the power to the little post.

John, The kill wire your referring to that runs from the coil to the kill switch. Would that be the wire in the wiring diagram that runs to the key switch # 3 contact marked magneto? I picked up a 14 hp magnum that had all the wiring stripped off and i would like to try to start it without burning up something. I notice in the wiring diagram it doesn't show the coil. where the wire comes off the engine is marked ( mag). Would that be the coil? Hope this makes sense. The old K series wiring is easier to work on, not as complicated. Any help appreciated. :dunno:

Not counting the oil level sensor and stator wiring, the Magnums have ONE wire that controls whether the coil sparks or not.

Grounding the wire shorts the ignition module (coil) and prohibits spark ~ just like a B&S push mower engine with Magnetron ignition. No points, no condenser, and no battery required.

As long as the kill wire to the module (coil) is not grounded, there should be spark. To stop the engine, the wire must be grounded. (to something conductive with the engine) In a Wheel Horse application, eventually that wire does connect to the "MAG" terminal on the ignition switch, but it usually passes through some safety switches and/or relays along the way.

Thanks Terry, This engine is not on a tractor, Therefore no safety switches to contend with. So can you give me a brief idea how i can wire it to see if it will run. :dunno:

If you have fuel, it should run with nothing but power to the starter motor to turn it over.

It would be wise to identify the "kill" lead from the module (coil) and be able to ground it just in case you need to shut it off for any reason.

Thanks Terry, That's exactly the info that i needed. Just the basic wiring to try it out without burning out some expensive parts. I have identified the coil wire and i will make sure i can ground it to shut it down. I was looking at the wiring diagram all along but couldn't decide a simple way to wire for testing. Many thanks for your help. :dunno:
