redidbull 54 #1 Posted November 19, 2011 Hello I bought this tractor,a 12HP Auto in Feb, and it has been great. I started to take it apart to do some painting, just the hood so far, and went back to start it last weekend and found this: It does not appear that they did any damage but the tractor will not start. I sprayed some starter fluid and it pops but no start. i got a new spark plug but the threads in the tractor seem stripped so the only plug that tightens is the old one but there is spark. There is a wire that goes to the Alt meter that I can not see but don't think it was damaged. I took out the jets and emptied the carb bowl but still no go. Any help would be appreciated. I want to get her going before the 1st snow hits. Thanks. Jim Also I added a new upright exhaust. I am not sure if I have a backpressure problem

Raider12 13 #3 Posted November 19, 2011 Did you look at the points at all? I would at least run a piece of sand paper through them? Denver

Denver Yes I put them in the degreaser and ran a thin file across them. Checked them with an ohm meter and they look good. Plug is getting a good spark. Visible in daylight. Thanks. TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #5 Posted November 20, 2011 Might be a shot in the dark, but try this: If the air cleaner assembly is still off, remove the spark plug wire at the coil, close the choke plate & place the palm of your hand over the carb opening, then turn the engine over with the starter for a few revolutions. If there is sufficient "draw" or vacuum, you should feel your hand being sucked against the carb. This action will also help prime the carb - which will be evident by gas running back out of the carb. If gas is present in the carb, reinstall the plug wire & try to start the engine. redidbull 54 #6 Posted November 20, 2011 I will try that in the AM. I am going to have to readjust the jets I diddled with too. Thanks. Jim

I just went out charged up the battery, put in a little more gas, readjusted the carb and did as you said and she fired up. I really think it is what you said that did the trick. Thanks so much. Now to put it all back together and get it away from the woody area of my small yard to try to keep mice at bay. Thanks again. Jim
