Operator 7 #1 Posted November 13, 2011 Picked up a 520H with a blown motor, then picked up an 18 Onan. Bolted in, then came the 9 pin electrical plug. Motor side is 9 pin, tractor side is 9 pin, BUT the color of the wires don't match up! Haven't tried to start it yet but should I be concerned with the mismatched color coded wire? rmaynard 15,938 #2 Posted November 13, 2011 I would be concerned. My gut tells me that any time the colors are different, something may be wired differently. I would see if I could find the wiring diagrams for each. What year is the 520H, and what did the 18 come out of?
Operator 7 #3 Posted November 13, 2011 The 520 is around a 91-92 Has swept axle, the 18 came out of another Horse , guessing 418. I can find out for sure I got it from anoter member . Thanks Bob.
rmaynard 15,938 #4 Posted November 13, 2011 Here's the wiring of the connector for a 1990 520-H If you can find more info on the 18, we can compare the two wiring diagrams.
Operator 7 #5 Posted November 13, 2011 Thanks Bob! I just sent an E-Mail to the 18 po, I'll let you know when I get an answer.
TT-(Moderator) 1,147 #6 Posted November 13, 2011 If it is positively a engine, the P-218 was only used in the 1988/89 518-H here in the USA. Personally, I would pull the harness and corresponding (extra) electrical components off of the P-220 and install them on the P-218, then it should be "plug & play". Operator 7 #7 Posted November 13, 2011 So Terry you are saying to pull the harness off the bad 20 hp and put that on the 18 hp? What about just match colors up?
Operator 7 #8 Posted November 13, 2011 And yup you are right Terry it came from a 518H, I heard back from Tom on the 18HP. He has the tractor side of the harness yet but I like Terry' thinking to use 20hp harness.
TT-(Moderator) 1,147 #9 Posted November 13, 2011 I am pretty sure there are a few electrical gadgets on the 520 engine that are not on the 518 engine. If you transfer the 520 engine harness and related sensors to the 518 engine, it will be easier - and everything should work like it's supposed to.
