I need help identifying a Kolher [s]26hp[/s] 22hp

Recommended Posts

I tried searching the forums but do not find any previous posts about this engine.

Family - AKH62481G2H

Model - CH228 CH22S <<< edited

Spec - 65526

Disp - CC624

Serial - 27308777

The seal behind the flywheel was improperly installed by the PO and it leaked oil all over the stator and nearby electrical (ignition control box?) and now it is not getting any spark at all. I need to find out a procedure to test the entire electrical circuit, manual?, schematic? :wh: Help please. :dunno:

Umm ... can you check your numbers again?

I'm no expert on these engines, so anybody else who wants to chime in, feel free.

According to the Kohler web site, Spec. 65526 belongs to a CV20 engine, a 20 HP with a vertical shaft.

There's also a CH22S (not CH228), Spec. 66526, which is a 22 HP, horizontal shaft.

Both of these engines are Command PRO twins that displace 624 cc's, but neither one puts out 26 HP. What kind of machine is your engine on -- neither one of these two came as original equipment on any Wheel Horse that I know of.

Owner and service manuals are available for both of these as free downloads from Kohler.

By the way, I haven't checked much today, but the Search function on this new version of RedSquare isn't operating quite right yet, and won't be fully operational for a couple more days or so.

Thanks Ed, you are right my eyesight isn't what it used to be and I didn't write the numbers down myself. It is in fact a Command Pro 22hp horizontal. Its not my engine and I am not real sure what it came out of. It is being used to repower a Terramite backhoe, hopefully before winter sets in hard as we both need it to install new water mains from our wells. I looked it up on the Kolher website and am downloading the service manual for it right now.

I don't know if what you are looking for is in the service manual, but here is a link:

Yes sir that is the one I downloaded. :help:

LOL... I really do need to get myself a good pair of general purpose sight enhancement devices. :thanks:

Now that I have had time to read through the service manual I am wondering if this is going to be the right engine for the job. The little box that I was concerned about is called a GCU  (Governor Control Unit) that controls an electronic governor?!?! and also found that you can seriously damage the electrical system by checking for ignition spark the old fashioned way... another  The thing is probably a boat anchor now because we are not going to spend another $400 to $500 replacing all that (in my opinion) useless junk that Kolher engineers have dreamed up to make us spend money on their products.

Is it just Kolher that has ruined the simplicity of working on small engines? Or are all of the small engine manufacturers doing this? Honda? B&S? Onan? I have never seen such a complicated mess in my entire life. :wh:

Is there anyone here that is an expert Kolher serviceman who can ease my disgust of this engine? Is there a way to throw away all of the electronic garbage and make it work in a machine that will be slinging mud and dirt all over it by the truckload? Or do I have to admit to being defeated by a lawn mower engine? :thanks:

TT

I would sooner think that the black box is a "SAM" - or spark advance module.

You can easily eliminate all of that electronic gadgetry by installing non-SAM modules (coils) in place of the current pieces, and running a common "kill" wire from each coil to a grounding type ignition switch.

I have done this (Vermeer chipper @ work) using coils from a CV twin.

AWESOME!!! :dunno: I was sure someone here would have a workaround. Now I just need to find a pair of these coils and we will be diggin with machinery.
