RyanM84 0 #1 Posted October 23, 2011 Hey my tractor 91 312-8 fires right up but shuts down after like a minute or two then it turns over but wont fire up... I have a clean air filter I bought this summer... My dad told me to take the bowl off the carburator and clean that out and that helps it start but I dont want to be tearing that off every time... Tractor runs great after i get it running... I run it atleast once or twice a week but lately it has been giving me a problem please help...
MikesRJ 558 #2 Posted October 23, 2011 Take the carburetor off and clean it thoroughly. Follow this instruction (for a Kohler/Carter carburetor) if you've never done it before. You'll also have to take the Hi and Low jet needle valves out and clean all the ports real well. A new rebuild kit wouldn't hurt either (about $15). http://www.mywheelhorse.com/graphics/file/...etorRebuild.pdf
RyanM84 0 #3 Posted October 24, 2011 Alright sounds like a plan... I will get it removed and clean it up... Could you stear me in the direction of a rebuild kit... Should I just go to a kohler dealer???
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #4 Posted October 24, 2011 Have you checked the in-tank strainer - or at least checked for adequate flow at the fuel shut-off valve at the tank? How about the condition of the rubber fuel line? Look for damp spots along its entire length. If it's original, it could be cracked to the point that the fuel pump is sucking air. You're working with a 20 year old machine, so unless it has already been recently addressed, it's probably wise to just replace the entire fuel line and add a quality inline filter while you're at it. MikesRJ 558 #5 Posted October 24, 2011 Alright sounds like a plan... I will get it removed and clean it up... Could you stear me in the direction of a rebuild kit... Should I just go to a kohler dealer??? Assuming you have the original engine (M12S-471527) and carburetor, the original Kohler Carburetor Rebuild Kit part number is Kohler 25 757 11-S. If you want aftermarket parts then search Google for Stens part numbers "520-350" and "055-513". I keep getting a 404 error. I usually don't have a lot of problems with carburetor rebuilds but when I saw your link suggestion my brain said, "you better grab that .pdf or your going to regret passing it up!" :dunno:
jbillick 0 #8 Posted November 7, 2011 Hi there - I had the same problem with my 310-8 and just solved it: Pulled the tank valve, straightened out the filter screen, replaced the fuel lines and fuel filter. Made a world of difference. My father thought it was the fuel pump, and I was going to replace the pump and clean out the carb, but got lucky with the easier solution. ~good luck

chevrat68 19 #11 Posted November 17, 2011 Could be your condenser. I had a problem with an old chevy with points.
TT-(Moderator) 1,162 #12 Posted November 17, 2011 A '91 312 is originally equipped with an M12 Kohler Magnum - meaning no points or condenser. In most cases, the ignition module (coil) on the Magnums either work - or they don't.
