brandon250 0 #1 Posted October 17, 2011 I have a lot of play in my d 200 steering and i was wondering how i can get rid of that, i have replaced the tie rods and still have all most a full turn of play before it starts to turn
Sparky-(Admin) 23,277 #2 Posted October 17, 2011 Theres a steering box that you can access from under the machine with no attachments hanging off it. On the bottom of the box is a "star" looking part that will turn with a bit of force. Theres a cotter pin holding it in place. Make small adjustments till the steering is to your liking and replace the pin, but dont expect it to be as tight as a new car. Mike........
Trouty56 567 #3 Posted October 17, 2011 On the right hand side of the box is where the drag link (the part from the steering box to the front steering assembly) connects. Look up along the side and there will be a screw with a set nut. Loosen the nut and carefully tighten the screw. It is advised to remove the drag link when adjusting this so you can feel it better. I jacked the front up off the ground. Tighten a little and feel if it is making the steering tighter or just making it harder to turn the wheel. There is a worm gear that this screw rides in. If the worm gear is worn then this will not help. It will only tighten against the worm gear. You want the screw in the valley of the worm gear but not bottoming out hard. There are rebuilt steering assemblies around. You should get the manual. It is described in detail. I think it is the right hand side where the worm gear screw is. Sparky, I didn't know about the other adjustment. I'll have to remember that.

wh79d160 52 #7 Posted October 22, 2011 , Got the parts from JD, It's the same Ross , steering column In stead of useing the two jam nuts on the side shaft, I used a thrust bearing & a thin lock nut. P.S. I wouldn't tighten the lower cup very much , if @ all. All you will do is break the plastic bearing cage. If you can even get to the jam nuts on the side shaft, only tun it initially, 1/4 turn, no more, no less. Then, if you need to tighten it more, turn it 1/2 turn, no more, no less. This repositions the pointed stud to the unworn part. Let me know is you need part #'s. I have a pic of the invoice some place.
dgoyette 12 #8 Posted October 22, 2011 Tom great information and NICE job on that column. It would be great if you could find the invoice with the JD part numbers. I am sure it would be helpful now and in the future for members.
