littleredrider 409 #1 Posted October 16, 2011 On my 854 while cranking, the up/down motion of the piston pushes the dipstick out of the block. Once the motor is running, if you pull the dipstick out, you can hear the pressure inside, not to mention fine spray of oil in the face. This is a new short block installed who knows how long ago. I notice the other day that the head gasket was leaking, could be from the pressure inside. Everything looked fine, just some carbon build up from hard starts. I pulled the breather off, other than some oil was fine. The "flap" was installed correctly, toward the right and out if looking at it. So if it's not the breather, possibly the rings?? I haven't used the tractor much, but seems to run good and not lacking on power....just want to get it fixes, weary if I run it like this somethings gonna give....
