654 Rebuild

Recommended Posts

Hello, I am rebuilding a 654. I bought it a number of years ago and tore it down completely, sandblasted or stripped everything and am now putting it back together. The problem I am having is that I had to cut the clutch idler shaft off because the roll pin on the clutch rod pivot arm had bent and I could not get it apart any other way than cutting it off and drilling out the remaining rod from the two arms. Now I welded up a new rod to the idler arm and installed the pivot arm at a ninety degree angle to the idler arm. This worked ok but the belt tension was not enough. So I drilled a new hole and set the pivot arm up at zero degrees difference from the idler arm. This made the belt too tight and did not work at all because of interference on the pivot side. I made another one with a twenty-five degree angle and this seems to work pretty good. Does anyone know the correct angle between these two arms ? I am getting really good at making these assemblies and now that I have enough practice I would like to get the angle correct.

I have a jig I made to line up the arm and the pin at the right angle.

If you dont get an answer, I'll try to look for it tonight and measure the angle. Now I think of it, I havent seen that thing for a few years... :thumbs2:

Thanks, I hope someone can measure the angle otherwise it will just be cut and try.

OK, my ugly little fixture was a little hard to measure, but the best number I could come up with was 28 degrees. I've done at least 3 arms off this fixture and they all seem to work OK, so I think the number should be close enough.

When I made the fixture, I filed a line across the old shaft before I cut it. Then after it was removed from the tractor I welded it back together with the file mark lined up and made the fixture from that.

Great. Just to be sure, the twenty -eight degrees is the angle between the idler arm and the brake arm or the idler arm and the holes for the brake arm ?

Its the angle between the idler arm and the hole for the roll pin to go through.
