Front Axle Change Over on a 520H

Recommended Posts

Raider12

I have a 1990 520H that has the swept front axle and I would like to change it to the straight axle. I never plan to use a 60" deck or a front loader. But I do need to use a snow plow on this machine. Does anyone know if this would be a simple swap? Do the straight axles have a 1" spindle and use the same tie rods? :thumbs2:

Thanks for any input.

You would have to swap out the axle, spindles, wheels, tie rods, & lower steering shaft to do the conversion.

The 520 parts are pretty unique to that model & heavy duty.

I'm not to familiar with the early model 520's (pre 60" deck) that had the straight axle...that mightg be another swap option?

I'm sure someone here would want your swept forward axe & would jump at the chance to swap parts with you?

I'd say keep the forward swept axle on your 520 & look for or have a snowplow extention fabricated for it.

Or use an early long frame plow & bracket. (used on the 953/1054/GT14)

They went straight back & didn't have the bend in them like the later ones do that put the plow frame parallel with the tractor frame.

The early style bracket set the plow frame just ahead of the axle center line instead of at bottom center.

The 1st 520H I owned had that setup on it.

I would be too, but think reworking the plow or replaceing it would be a better option. :thumbs2:

I have a D200 snow plow up here Denver that I might be interested in parting with. I havent tried it on my 520, but have been told that it will fit.

I'm not too far from you if you want to have a look.

It would be A LOT easier to just find a snow blade extension. :banghead:

You should keep it original if you ever plan on selling it. :thumbs2:

You would seriously devalue the tractor if you get rid of the stock front end. But I would gladly give you every single part you need if you would give that junky forward swept. :thumbs2:

:thumbs2::banghead: Im thinking! A buddy of mine wants this tractor and all he will ever use it for will to mow and plow snow. He would never take advantage of the swept front axle. But I do consider the work involved compared to making an extension for blade.

This is what you need for the swept axle 520-Extension .Shouldn't be hard to have fabricated. Only pic I could find. It lengthens the frame 6" to clear the wheels.
