Vinylguy 4,692 #1 Posted October 7, 2011 For four years I have been asked many times when I was going to get my own horse. Well I finally have one. Purchased a local 1968 Lawn Ranger. I will get it home next week. Bought it site unseen for $100 PO says it runs and mows but he has not used it for two seasons. He put a briggs in it because the Tecumseh was shot. How hard will it be to find an original 6HP for this tractor? Will post pictures as soon as I get it home. Very excited to finally have one to restore. Now all I need is grass to mow. :banghead:
farmer 1,078 #2 Posted October 7, 2011 Good to hear you've took the plunge, mmm.... if you do a restore, who will supply the stickers. :thumbs2:
kloe0699 12 #3 Posted October 7, 2011 Glad your finally on board. I would think that you would have no trouble finding a replacement engine for your ranger with the company you keep. Love your bike btw :thumbs2:
Gene_S 93 #4 Posted October 7, 2011 Good little tractor to have Terry!!! The 6 horse motors aren't to hard to find. I have a few extras sitting around but need gone through... Your lawn ranger will be the same as my wifes... The one with the stinking paint eating the back of the decals you seen at Scotts because the paint wasn't cured before applying!!! I wont be doing that again... Good luck and have fun... :banghead:
kpinnc 14,688 #5 Posted October 7, 2011 Terry, Put a Kohler small-block (K-141, 161, or 181) in it. Not original I know, but you'll probably enjoy it much more if you do. Fits right in there: I don't think the Teccy engine will be hard to find, but the carburetors are a bit finicky... Glad you finally got one regardless! Welcome to the addiction! :thumbs2:
Rollerman 290 #6 Posted October 7, 2011 Good to hear Terry & nice meeting you at Scott's. The Rangers are a nice little tractor that won't take up to much room. I have two & there among my favorites. Kevins right about the Kohler small block. The H60 Tucky engine seem to run decent when everything is in good shape, but don't seem to hold up over the years like the Kohlers. HorseFixer 2,013 #7 Posted October 7, 2011 Well its about TIME! 10-dash 4 on the Kohlers. Awe what the heck pull a Tim Taylor cut a hole in the hood, and slam a 16hp Big Block in there! Will give you a little more weight for traction. I know a guy who makes Repo Decals if your interested. ~Duke
rmaynard 16,363 #8 Posted October 7, 2011 I don't know how you could make all those decals for everyone else's tractor and not have one of your own. Well those days are over. Welcome to the addiction. What's next on your list?
emsfire138 4 #9 Posted October 7, 2011 Congrats! Which model do you have (1-1631 - recoil start only, 1-2631 - electric & recoil start)?? I have two the 1968 Lawn Rangers - one of each model. One is currently being restored - the other I got from the 2nd owner, who had it for 20+ years. I do have a couple of the original H-60 engines. Let me know if you decide to go that route. Here is a pic of the hood and fender from the one I am restoring. Wonderful decals! Where did I find those again???... Scott in IL Attached Image

Lane Ranger 11,439 #11 Posted October 7, 2011 Terry: Good to see you picked a Lawn Ranger. A great tractor to start out with on a WHeel Horse venture! The 1968 is a little more "showy" with the bigger side decals but it's the same basic tractor as the 1967's. Good luck with this and hooler if you need soemthing! :thumbs2:

Welcome to the addiction. What's next on your list? Well Bob I first need to get my wife Lola as excited about this as I am. She about had a fit until I told her it was only $100 What she does not know is how much I will spend on it once I get it to the shop. Will give you a little more weight for traction. I know a guy who makes Repo Decals if your interested. ~Duke I will wait till I find a scrapped D-series and go with a Valkyrie 1500 stretch the frame 1 foot and figure out how to still make it mow with 100 HP But I am already thinking the Kohler would be the best choice. whfan74 2,072 #21 Posted October 7, 2011 This is awesome Terry! I am glad to hear you finally picked one up. Good choice and it won't take up a ton of room. If your wife keeps giving you fits about it, tell her you picked it up and are storing it for me! So is this new machine going to be decked out with some one of a kind fancy decals???? neil 2,410 #22 Posted October 7, 2011 congratulations Terry on your purchase , does this mean you are going to have your spare time taken up with the restoration project . im not a gambling man really, but i bet that the lawn ranger has some company within say 6 months . Vinylguy 4,692 #23 Posted October 7, 2011 With the spare time I have had lately it could be 6 months before I get started. The PO is not home till later so it looks like next week before I can get it home.

Once I see the condition of the tin I may try to wrap it just for an experiment. I can always paint it later. Or maybe make it a special edition Gold series. The nice thing about what we do is I can dress it up and then change it back.Might make a Lone ranger Silver bullet Edition. Got me thinking now. Thinking about what I might do is almost as much fun as doing it.

Good luck.........Ed
